Hi, guys. I just wonder which server side scripting you are using.
Just curious to know your favorite.
Many thanks.

BTW, today I had a chat with my tutor. He told me ASP got more popular than used to be.
Becasue now one kind of Linux server support it right? I don't remember exactly but he said those kind of thing.
And another tutor who teaches programming at tech, love MS product.

Now it is not time to study server side yet. But now trying to make my mind for next couple of months.
Any comment will be greatful.
Cheers.

all server side scripting languages suck.

I personaly use php, but have been using asp at work a few times... I'd take php any day over the old asp.
Don't know about asp.net, though.

Never tried asp so I can't say anything about it, but I've been using php for a while now and I love it so far. Not that hard to learn the basics of and when you learn more you can do almost anything with it

Also started to dabble somewhat with perl lately and so far I like it.

PHP is very easy to learn and almost every real hosting service supports it. There is also a really large PHP commumity that has always been helpful to me.
ASP is part of the Borg. Once you're locked into it, it's almost impossible to get out. PHP, on the other hand, is portable and in case you need to change hosting services, you can probably just take your scripts with you and drop them into place.
A good place to start is http://www.php.net.

...and the ASP on Linux package you mentioned.

If you stick with PHP you'll find MUCH more free help while you're learning it. There's less information available and more money involved with MS technologies.

but then, I must add, PHP is far from a 'real language'... it's a special toy to make web applications, not more, not less.
Let's see what php 5 will bring... I think the latest 4.something also ran of the command line...
which could in total be a quick way to destroy a great, task-specific language by trying to make it the egg-laying-golden-wool-n-milk-producing piglet.

Actually PHP is more robust than that. It's just a young language comparitively. However there is both the Ability to use it from the command line and a PHP-GTK library for creating GUI applications with PHP.

That being said, I've always liked PHP because it was a simple language intended primarily for web development. I think that's what's made it's adoption so readily availible.

yes. webdevelopment. that what it's good for.
Not gui/gtk programming. Not shell scripts. But we'll have to wait and see.

Learn the ASP and CF next semester. I don't know anyone that knows too much. Plus, it sounds like it is required, so you have to take it and make the best of it.
Another thing about learning PHP is that it will prepare you for learning Perl, which is great for shell scripts and tons of other stuff.
PHP grew out of Perl so that web developers would have a convenient way to integrate scripting commands within the HTML. Before, you had to use a separate cgi script and the methods for processing forms, etc was not as intiuitive as it could have been. On the other hand, it worked well and gave a lot of real-time processing power to web apps.
I use Perl for shell scripts and PHP for web pages and a lot of developers do the same. It comes down to using the right tool for the job at hand.

right now I'm learning php, and I love it so far. As far as server side scripting languages go I plan on learning both php and coldfusion well.

I've done a bit of ASP and VB scripting recently. I'm still not to sure what to make of it yet. Although I'd choose PHP any day of the week.

Are people still using ColdFusion these days? It's always sounded like too much money for too little power. Personally, if I'm a small-to-medium business-owner, I'm going with anything that's not Microsoft -- and if Microsoft keeps increasing its prices, larger and larger businesses are going to turn away from them. Microsoft .NET has a lot of labor-saving features in comparison to PHP, but Microsoft Word has a lot of labor-saving features in comparison to Latex. Which do you want to publish a book with?
