The sig hosting on formclot.net will be going away indefinately, shortly.
I'll give those of you who are using this service a few days to snag your images....
I suspect it'll all be gone in 3 days time.

I'm sad to hear that Michael, but it was good while it lasted esp with a 50kb limit.
Just wanted to thank you for the service.

Michael .. That's really a sad thing ... is it a size issue? bandwidth? hosting? ... Write me an e-mail and we might be able to work out something. I'm prepared to consider taking over the service if I can manage the size/bandwidth/maintenance issues.

No promises, but I've got a few oodles of gigabytes going (slightly) spare, and a fast adsl link (shared with my radio station).

Because web hosting costs money.

The more space, the more transfer used, the more money it costs....

Yannah ... Because a lot of the hosting sites are set up by volunteers, and occasionally they move house, or can't afford to continue paying an ISP for other people's convenience.

ok ok ok, like Slime has a *small* issue with the interchangeable use of the words "java" and "javascript" I have to go on record with my pet peeve of the interchangeable use of "web host" and "ISP".

web host: someone you pay to host your web site(s). Virtual, dedicated, colocated all kinds, but hosting webs and web apps for the world to access.

ISP: someone you pay and use to in order to *connect* to the internet. DSL, cable, dedicated lines, dialup, all that, connecting to the internet via your Internet Service Provider.

While it's not beyond reason that the 2 would get mixed up and ISP used as a blanket term, it makes my skin crawl and in some cases it might even be anti-communicative to say such a thing, could confuse the heck out of someone you see.

Ahhhh. Feel better now.

Of course, confusing the issue even further is the fact that many ISP's also serve (on various levels) as web hosts (though I've never heard of a web host being an ISP)

Lovely rant, Jason. I agree.... now quit whinin'. =)

I suppose I'll take this opportunity to chime in.
I'll shoot out a blanket "thank you" to all the folks who shot emails my way to say "thanks for the sig hosting while it lasted".
Certainly wasn't expected... especially in the volume received.

I've had a number of people ask why this service is being cut-off.
And here ya have it:

The sig host was set up for Asylum use only. Despite various attempts... I cannot seem to limit the images to outside locations. I'm done fucking with it at this point. I won't bother myself with another 5 minutes of tinkering with the 6 lines of code that should be working as is.
With my sig hosting showing up #1 on google, everyone and their mother goes in and uploads. Last I checked, I was hosting around 1300 images. As I said... I've been unable to limit outside linking, therefore you can imagine how many of those images are non-asylum linked (150 asylum images... tops).
Lastly.... I set the sig host up just as the name implies. "Sig host".
While I can't limit what exactly anyone uploads... I went on the silly assumption that the whole thing was "understood".
I wasn't offering up webspace so asylum folks could upload pictures of their brother's dog to show to their friends and family.

So I came to the conclusion that I'm not going to bother being frustrated about it..... I'm just going to shut it down. No biggie.
*shrug*

Pretty simple.

Sorry Jason, I was confused by my own circumstance .. you see .. I pay my ISP for the bandwidth I consume ... I don't have a web host I am my web host :P

If peeps are looking for free hosts , I've found a lot of ISPs offer hosting if you dial up with them or whatever and dont have ads, they'll assume you'll be dialing up with them, but I dont think they'd check or even care. e.g www.eircom.net Ireland's main ISP (they own all the copper in the last/local loop thing so they 0wnz the market, they're whores too) they offer free hosting AFAIK, how much space im not sure, but ISPs are usually sorted when it comes to bandwidth and don't limit you.
If you do a search for free hosting you'll get the usual tripod/geocities style places, do a search for like "free internet access" or similar and scout about, same goes for email accounts.
