Your on the right track, it's black or dark.
I'll probably give it away with this, but think Infocom.
I'm just being silly with it, so don't waste all your time on it.

Something like that, yes.
But you'll only encounter it if your batteries are dead (I think, if I remember right, I could be wrong, it's been a long time), so the name thing doesn't always matter.

"Don't say it's name more than twice"? erm, Fight club? Nah you don't say that even once.
Great Gorgon sig Amerasu, it is a pity sometimes when we work on an image for a sig in a large format and then shrink it down. as it usually shrinks down all the goodness too.
Xcessive Force, I really like the dragon too.
I hope I'll have time for one this month too, I really want to get one in.

Well, the name thing doesn't really matter. So don't think too much along those lines. Just don't get caught in the dark.

Ensellitis - try Faygo Moon Mist instead of Mt. Dew if you can find it in your area

Think older than Harry Potter. Hang on, let me get the date. At least 1980, although it'll go a little further back to a dungeon from MIT. I've now given it mostly away without actually saying the name.
Night has nothing to do with it really, so it's not a Boogieman. It comes when it's pitch black or dark, so don't be caught wandering when your lantern batteries die.

Again, not much time to devote to my precious PS this month so I thought I'd better lash this one up now. Still got a couple of more ideas like perhaps animating the text in this one?

F1_error: I didn't get it at first, but the Infocom hint gave it away for me.
There was an entry once in one of the IF contests where you had to extinguish all light sources in order to make the mythical creature in question appear. I can't exactly remember why (I think it might have been because the creature would then free you from the room you were in or something like that), but it was a neat zero sum game and a nice twist on the old saw about being caught in the dark. Man, I haven't played a text adventure in ages...
