I have noticed that the fan on my CPU really has to work hard when I am rendering images or playing games. It gets loud!

I have not yet had my CPU overheat, but I like to play it safe... and you know... I wouldn't mind playing around with over clocking my system.

What do you suggest for keeping the CPU cool and happy?

Alos, the box is vented very well.

System:
Asus p4p800 Socket 478
3.2 ghz p4 cooled by the heatsink and fan that came with it
2 gigs of ram, that fancy corsair junk.
nVidia GeForce FX 5900 (running 2 1280x1024 Digital & Analog)

Do you think i could get much out of it over clockin it?

You should be able to get something around 60 USD that handels the heat better then your current one.
Now if the noise is one of your more pressing concerns then you are going to have to watch the dBArating of most of the fans. Been a while since I looked at this but I belive that anything around 20-30 dBA is relativly quiet.
Can find a lot of heatsinks here.

As for overclocking it looks like you can get around 2-800 MHz.
CPU database of overclocking

Just taking a quick look at you motherboard and it has some nice overclocking features to it and the Corsair RAM should help as well. All together it looks like you have a good setup to try overclocking. Though I would recommend that you read up on it some.

I overclocked a couple of machines but that was years ago so I'm not much help there but I did learn something only a few days ago about 'fans' that I'm sure that some here, maybe not you, but some don't know so this is for the 'some.' =)

When you're cleaning the inside of your computer with an 'air source' of any description.... the 'canned' stuff specifically DO NOT SPRAY DIRECTLY ON THE FAN UNLESS YOU ARE HOLDING (gently)THE FAN BLADE SO IT CANNOT TURN.

Specifically and most importantly you do not want the fan to spin in the opposite direction.

Low tho' it may be, a spinning fan generates 'current' and if the fan spins in the opposite direction that generated low current goes back into the computer following the path of least resistance resulting in a myriad of woes that can manifest in fried cpu's to fried hard disks and just about everything in between.

This apparently is not as uncommon as you might think and I can't help but wonder if that's what fried one of my hard drives.

So... don't spin the fan Sam! =)

It's really not that uncommon. My last boss took a can of BlowOff and cleaned out his computer with the case apart. Was checking the connection of his CD-ROM drive because it wasn't working, couldn't see very well and....whipped out his cig lighter. You can see where this is going.

The entire office smelt of burnt eyebrows Plus he looked funny for about a week or so. So yeah...becareful with that stuff.

Yarrr.... a rat? No wonder its gettin hot in there.

Thanks guys. I shall do some looking around.

I always was interested in the water cooling... just... *because* Now if I could just find a simple sealed cooling system. sweet.
