OK so we have done this before:

Forum software

But that was a few months ago and things move on.

Anyway I'm sick of phpBB - I suppose one of its problems is its success making it a target for hackers but there are features I want (the ability ot split and merge threads and PM - attachments would be nice. Did I mention free?) and as phpBB's core is so stripped down it means adding them in which makes updating difficult which means the speed of patching it can be reduced, etc., etc.

So I started a thread over on the GN:

http://www.gurusnetwork.com/discussion/thread/3177/

And as I'm never happy until I've quizzed everyone I thought I'd start one here on the same topic.

Sooooooooooooooooooo the suggestions so far that I like:

http://punbb.org/
http://lussumo.com/

Both nifty but rather feature-lite (I've never satisified!!) but I was just looking at another board on an unrelated topic and I thought "Hello whats this then?" - its got everything I want as part of the core:

http://www.simplemachines.org

Hell it even comes with a phpBB import script:
http://www.simplemachines.org/download.php?converters

Sooooo has anyone had any experience running this (I am actually an inactive member on a SMF without realising it and so have had a chance to nose around and it seems nice enough from the fornt end)? I'm going to give it a test install but I was wondering if anyone had run it in the wild as it were

I've used it some, installed it once (never really played with it), and heard good things. It's not PHP, iirc, which is a plus.

Looks like it is PHP.

Why would it not being PHP be a plus?

yeah that's php. It looks a heck of a lot like phpBB. It's pretty nice.

I know what you mean about phpBB. I'd rather poke needles in my eyes than update a phpBB.

Ok...

So PHP isn't suited for running a high end all inclusive e-commerce application suite.

What does that have to do with how well suited it is for coding a web forum?

Do you have an actual opinion on the issue, or have you just decided to go along with what some people have to say?

Science??!?!?

Results 1 - 10 of about 15,600 for "php sucks".

Results 1 - 10 of about 66,700 for "php rules".

Eh... I beg your pardon reiso...

Case study by mysql on our company for showing volumes & transactions (.pdf): http://www.mysql.com/why-mysql/case-studies/mysql-hp-ongame-casestudy.pdf

This is almost exclusively run using php...
I dare say we are a wee bit more intense than a high-end e-commerce site or a busy forum...

A good language can easily be horribly applied by bad developers, just as a simple language can be powerfully applied by good developers.

Science!

But seriously, it's more like a gut feeling I have, whenever I look at the code.

I don't care for MySQL or PDF, either, so that's not going to mean much to me.

OK so we've decided that some people think PHP is OK and some don't

-----------
An update:

I went for SMF.

Installation went fine.

Importing a small-medium phpBB DB went smoothly and really quick.

I am happy with the features and the admin panel is one of the nicest of any forum I've used and has handy options including the ability to turn search engine friendly URLs on and off. It lets you know when there are updates and will go and grab them and install them for you.

I'm very happy and awfully impressed so far.
