Hello all,

I am in the midst of a struggle :
the polite thing to do here is read fully if you feel like it, or give up altogether, more flame wars
will most probably destroy my motivation to positive contributions altogether.

The second polite thing to do is to leave a judgemental self at the entrance : this is about facts, not judgement.

Firstly, I have fixed my radio player mouse events problem, on the frontpage : http://www.beyondwonderland.com/
Will echo this in the "standalone" version asap.

The trick of the trade was :
------------------------------
mouseup and mousedown should return false to prevent event bubbling,
and it's better to catch the mousedown event on the document object in a case like this.

Nobody spent the few seconds required to link me to some good resources on the topic - stuff happens, so I am doing both :
1) Answer my own question for me AND..
2) For you
------------------------------

Do you think this is the attitude of someone seeking for attention? If yes, guess harder.
I need advice as much as I am willing to give it myself, for NO I am not an overpowerful being
with omniscience.

Next :
------------------------------
I had a question about real world applications of Comet : poi has stressfully answered a bit beside the question,
like a guy in a hurry - no offense meant, but I am left thinking "Comet is as shitty as the few samples I have seen in action."
Simply because I did receive no answer on the topic at all.

My Flash module for the Asylum is based on my experience of safely integrating different mediums.
It is worth my fighting the public opinion, getting a vote, patiently standing criticism AND investing the development time.
You think the community would pay me the courtesy of thinking it over before
putting me through hoops?

Next :
------------------------------
The 20 liners - I am the first advocate.

I have patiently crafted a full speed pixel buffer, 200x200, to test the capabilites and finally
find some of the comfort I have when toying with Java applets back in a canvas element.

I am left with enough time to use it for -anything I'd like- it's not blazingly fast, but it's a new approach -
much more interesting to me (because it will shed new lights on new grounds, although it may not win due to the speed -
see, my concern is playfully contributing).

Enough time.

But a HUGE drop in motivation - I have a great life, great job, great friends, great family, I value the best in this community,
but am overlfy fed up of the flaming and "tingleys showing" attitude - see my post about a "nation of wimps",
it's not me who is complaining about the issue, it's a society issue observed by psychologists worldwide.

What I can do on my end is tone down the cockyness and volume of posts to prevent ambiguity in the other person's perception.
OR NOT : I have not done or meant anything negative, recently, to this community, did again a lot of positive instead.

And for fuck's sake, I am myself - like it, good for you, don't like it, feel free to get out of my fucking way.

(had to get it off my chest)

one more line, and I'd have closed this thread right away, as I've promised.

I'm not quite seeing where you're actually going with this - to many points, not enough actionable material.

And I haven't followed all the threads you're talking about.
But as for the flash ubb code, I believe you were encouraged, somewhere in the (felt) half a dozen threads you started on the topic,
to provide a working sample, that then would be integrated if it was 'fit' (which I've expected it to be) and on the additonal constraint
of being compatible with an open source flash compiler.

Is that a 'hoop'?

so long,

Ps: Can't you once write a post without a swear word we were minor friendly, back in the day...

Shouting from the entrance: Chill out man

Trying not to pass judgment, just expressing opinion:

I think there's something stressful in your life right now. Maybe you are doing too many things at the same time.

This is a tiny community and sometimes it just so happens that people who may know the answer to a particular very specific question may have too many things on their own minds or more probably there may not be such a person at all. Surely you're not expecting anyone to Google "event bubbling problems" and forward you the links.

About the radio: the volume knob still stays ~10 pixels to the left of the cursor in my FF2 but at least now the release works.

Looking back at my post ... I hope it cannot be perceived in any negative way.

@TP : Open communication, simply, I'd like to leave these feelings in the past once for all.

LMAO - ok, I think I will adress ONE of my self limiting beliefs here, based on a bad habit of
..being scared of posting and receiving flames back. It's not the quality of my work which I doubt,
or the quality of my life for that matter, it's the way my intent will be welcome or not -
for personal reasons, conflict itself is one of my greatest fears.

Which fuels a need to convince, which in turn fuels an impression I seek for attention, which fuels flames,
which... a giant friggin' loop, but it should be manageable and get better over time.

Especially will plain feedback, and accurate, like the one I just got - feels perfectly legit and respectful.

@Arthurio : the volume knob - I want it to slide "behind" your mouse trace - simple reason : the ipod interface works this way.
Many things in my life yes, but rest assured they're happy things - coming with some burdens and efforts, though.

...I feel better, a lot better : if a thread's purpose is to ask a question and come up with better ways to handle a problem.
Then thanks guys - it worked well this time around.

Still about the knob :P

I understand that it is supposed to kind of 'lag' behind the cursor, no? In my browser it just stays fixed 10px to the left no matter which way I'm moving it. That's why I'm suspicious that this is not the effect you are going for.

Okay. Educated guess - IE 5 or 6? Up until now, I used a crippled way to calculate the position of the knob relative to the pannel.

Wrongly - it is subject to too many factors that change across browsers and css declarations to be handled by a quick fix.
I've posted a quirksmode article in the mentionned thread which will solve my problem - offsetLeft, offsetRight, offsetTop, etc. properties
"should" get the job done without quirks. (that's the "missing bit" I was looking for - geez, two years off of any javascript, it takes time
to get back on track fully).

And now that the motivation is flowing, thanks again for the pointers, I will handle it as needed.

ah yes, if the volume knob (tee hee) is supposed to trail _behind_ the cursor then it only does it when I scroll to the right, if I move my mouse left it is always infront of my cursor

As Blaise says, the effect actually works correctly, but as if the mouse were a few pixels to the left of where it actually is. It slides 'behind' the mouse, but offset slightly. (FF3)

Funky I use these two versions of Firefox myself for testing.
Are you guys on Vista by any chance? I am on XP home here.

>> but as if the mouse were a few pixels to the left of where it actually is

The position of the mouse is used as a "target for dynamic deceleration" of the volume knob movement, eg, the pos at any given time
is "median of (mousex - knobpos)" - or at least it should be (and completely looks like that here and on my ipod touch).

(anyhow, a proper implementation of this based on the right properties should fix these quirks altogether - off to nightly
classes, networking course).
