Avril Lavigne is very pretty. And her studio has assigned her good songwriters, musicians, studio technicians, makeup and wardrobe artists, and marketing/publicity people. With all that machinery behind her, she's bound to be appealing, if not exactly groundbreaking. I mean, what do you want out of pop? |

I am actually not partial to Avril Lavigne, she doesn't appeal too much. I think it's because of the makeup If you ask me, it ruins the effect... |

actually, the one thing that impressed me about her (avril, not yannah ) is that she does write her own music from what i understand. there's some diversity in her music too, a friend of mine had the cd and in listening to it there's some interesting ideas there. pop-ish? definitely. but i've certainly been forced to listen to worse... |

I like Avril. I listen to her album quite often and I can relate to many of her songs. She has a nice voice too and she wears normal clothes and almost no makeup. She doesn't use her body to sell her music like so many other artists do. I think she's great. |

As fenja points out you did have an AL sig when you first came here ('What who me punk, no way!!') - in fact some us still secretly love that sig |

I kind of like her album. Her music has some variety to it, and her choruses are kind of catchy... I wouldn't go so far as to say she's "punk", I remember what punk is... Pop is closer to what she's turning out. She's a kid still, and therefore entitled to some play with her clothes and make-up. But she has some talent. The question is: can she repeat her success without starting to repeat herself. That was the problem Fiona Apple had. Her second album sounded exactly like her first one. |

I've only heard a couple of songs from her. It was ok, better than a lot of things, but far from good. Calling her music punk would be wrong imo, calling it pop with small elements of punk and rock would be closer to target imo. The lyrics (the ones I've heard) are pretty good as well, but there are other bands out there that write better lyrics. |

This thread really just goes to prove that taste in music will always be subjective -- I really liked both Fiona Apple's albums, and I thought the second was slightly better than the first. |

I don't like her, yeah it's true that I used her image as my sig...(once) but there's words in it that could prove that I don't like her...I have her cd because of my sister... |

These days, mainstream music is all about marketing. Anyone keep up with that American Idol? A prime example of the blatant commercialism of the music industry. Every now and then, you come across an artist who's managed to make it decently and still keep their soul. Ben Harper is one I can think of off the top of my head... |

I remember when Britney Spears was in Norway, she was asked if her relationship with Justin was like John Lennon and Yoko Ono. Britney said: "who???". Then the interviewer said: "Maybe like Paul McCartney and Linda then?". Britney: "I'm sorry. I'm still so young. I don't know who these people are." |

Avril L is a big sample of manufactured crap! She can't sing and i'm not just saying this, she sang live on British radio without the aid of a computer etc (bbc radio 1, live lounge) and she couldn't reach the high notes ( i would have said struggled to reach, but that is too kind) and sounded awful sorry kids little rebel Avril isn't what you think! |

Personally I think an "artiste" like Avril is more damaging than an American Idol (or Pop Idol as we have here in the UK). She is far less blatantly commercial, even though underneath she is doubtless as bad as any other. Therefore her commercial approach to what is, in my opinion, an art form of sorts is doubly wrong. I wrote an rant about her, among other things, on my site a while back: http://quis.coolfreepage.com/?p=articles/society |
