I think it is time to do come spring cleaning on my computer.... my C drive is 72% full hehehe. I know that some ways are good ways to clean things out... like going though my old folders and deleting old art work and defragging the drive, but what else could free up some space? Any of you know of any good progs to help clean things up? I have a 40 gig drive with XP home on it. Also any good programs for defragging other than xp's defragger? BTW... have not defragged in about 8 months... (talk about miss procrastination...)

On the topic of defragging, I bought Norton Utilities and started using its defrag program, and it defrags my 20GB drive in about an hour, rather than the eight hour, overnight job required of Win98s defrag program. How XPs defrag differs, I can't say, but Norton worked great for me.

Well XP once estimated to defrag my 80 GB HDD it would take 3.4 days...

If you just switch to NTFS in XP you don't have to defrag. Also I would stay away from cleanup programs. If you really want to do some spring cleaning the best medicine is always a fresh install of Windows.

Actually, even if you do use NTFS, you still need to defrag every so often. Although it does a decent job of keeping files from fragmenting, it's far from perfect, and not as efficient as M$ marketing would like you to believe.

Dont' get me wrong, it's a great file system, but defrag it just the same.

For spring cleaning, I'd recommend SequoiaView. It gives you a nice graphical representation of the space used on your hard drive, and lets you see where most of your drive space is allocated. It's also color coded for file type.

80 gig harddrive, 138 mb left...
I gotta burn some of the movies I downloaded. I downloaded like 20 gigs of movies last weekend. Good stuff though. And I got just about every episode of the Sopranos which I've heard is really good.

I'd save all your worthwhile files to a CD and then just do a clean install.

You can save your install time by switching to RedHat Linux. :-)

I'm with silence. You sstill have to defrag NTFS, although not quite as often as a FAT drive.

I've used Diskeeper since version 2 came out at about the same time as NT4 beta 2. Now it's in version 7, second edition and I'm still a satisfied customer.

Try taking all that porn off your hard drive...

I have 60 gig hard drive and XP Pro defrags in about 18 minutes. And I use a little app called clean Disk:

Ive been thinking about getting linux for a while. but theres a lot of windows programs that i use and i heard that the conversion software can only do some of them. And I don't want to dual boot becuase thatll take up even more space. so what would i do if i wanted to free up some space. (I defrag every night while i sleep)

Wolfen, being a lady doesn't automatically mean you don't like porn. Hell, the second most fanatic porn collector I know happens to be female.

As for the linux suggesiton... gah. I tried linux, it shat me to tears. *nix is great for a server but for an everyday OS, no thanks. It's just not my thing. Besides, I'd need to have a win pc for my gaming and PS habbits (gimp, whilst being technically good, just don't cut the mustard I'm afraid) and maintaining a dual boot PC is a ripe royal pain that I never wish to attempt again, ever.

...If he is, that´s because he doesn´t know me

On the topic of "Temporary Internet Files":
I´m Using XP Pro. I just deleted everything in the TIF-folder, and I can´t see any files left in it (yes, I have enabled seeing hidden and system files), but when I open the folder´s properties, it tells me there are some thousand files and acouple of folders in it, with a total of about 100 megs... WTF is going on?
