I have recently netoworked my 2 computers. One is running win 95, the other win 98.

What do I have to do to share the internet access between the two??
I can't find crap for help from the windows help documentation. Can I do this without a major hassle?

Please help

I would suggest using a proxy program. I couldn't get the winblows Internet sharing working, so I downloaded a proxy and was online in about 10-20 mins. I personally use a crappy one cause it was free, but http://www.wingate.com was nice before my demo expired.

DL, since you probably don't want any exotic features (you have only two computers in peer2peer network), this program will do fine: http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/proxy.htm

Ok dude.. do you have dsl line or cable? First of all.. you need a router if you want to share same ISP account at the same time. You need to route your IP address so the other PC sees it. YOu can pick a nice router ( LS Links) for around 150 bucks. You won't need a hub or anything like that for it and the coolest thing is ... you can have 2 computers online at the same time. Some of the network config requires one computer to be off while another one is on the internet. Get a router man.

Yes, I agree on the router approach. It also provides a firewall if you get a decent one. I have had good luck with this model: http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?prid=20&grid=5

Internet Connection Sharing is a integral piece of Win 98. It will allow you to share your connection to anything else on the network. Whack the F1 key and look it up. It's pretty straight forward.

Then I'd install a firewall software like ZoneAlarm to keep things safe.

I tried looking through the windows help and really didn't find anything helpful. I'll look deeper I guess -- I had alwyas heard that win98 would do it on it's own. Thanks pugzly.

I just grabbed a $30 hub, installed a few protocols that the instructions told me to install, and I was online in no time. I not only share my internet connection, but also my printer, scanner, hard drive, and burner. Seems to work great for me.

If you need more, go to Google and do a search on "internet connection sharing". I have found that google is a great search engine. I use it almost exclusively now.

anyone know of a proxy like analogX, but it can use ICQ, FTP and other things that don't work on analog. I once had ftp'ing working over the proxy, but it only worked on certain sites. Now i can't get it to work again.

A little mroe detail for anyone wondering - I do have a hub, and have printers and drives shared and all that, just wasn't able to get windows to share the internet.

I did download analog, and am currently using it -- works quite nicely.

I am going to check out those links though briggl, because I *would* like to get it set up through windows without relying on outside programs.

DL: I had that same problem when I had two boxes networked. File, printer, drive sharing all worked great, but the client computer would not recognise the internet connection.
It`s academic ( for me ) now `cause the other computer moved out, but I hate loose ends. If you figure it out, let me know. OK ?

You need win98 *2nd edition*......which apperantly is not what I have.
ah well, the analog proxy deal is working out well so far. Good enough.

AnalogX is ok, but it sucks that you can't download from FTP. Whenever I want to, I have to go to my parent's puter and Download it. Another thing with analogX is that you can't use IRC.

I'm telling ya, just grab a cheap hub and install IPX/SPX and netBLEUI. Nothing to it.

dude.. just spend some money and get a damn router. Saves you headache and you won't need to fuck around with MS trying to figure this shit out

Mbridge, IPX/SPX is not used for internet/intranet communications. It should be TCP/IP...

I have a hub.
IPX/SPX netBLEUI and TCP/IP protocols all set.
that doesn't make it share an internet connection.

I'm not speniding $150 bucks for a router.....some of us don't have that kind of money to spend on superflous crap like this.

I haven't tried to do it yet, but analogx says that it supports FTP? If not, again, no biggee for me. My main computer is where I do all my downloading and will do 90% of my internet stuff anyway. The secondary computer is just that -- secondary

so, again-- thanks for all the help and suggestionss. And to recap -- windows 98 *2nd edition* has built in ICS (and briggl's links have excellent information on it), but apparently I have the edition that does not. Followed max's link to Analogx, got it, use it, works for my needs so far

DL, IPX/SPX is not necessary anymore. NetBEUI is now used for file & printer sharing, and TCP/IP for internet/intranet communications...

Also, if you need a freeware proxy with more features than analogx's, take a look at the other URL that I posted above (that one has support for MS SOCKS protocol, so programs like ICQ work, too)...

I hear that!!! And nobody better classify games as superfluous, eh? Red Alert 2 and Unreal Tournament are my current favorites

You know whats a good game? Check Half Life. I liked it but the realy good one is HITMAN. It makes you think.Unlike all those other games that make you blow up everything in your path

I don't play all that many games....not big into the 1st person-run and killstuff games...(they make me dizzy )

I play command and conquer (red alert and tiberian sun....) warcraft and diablo. That's about it

Hmm, I thought I'd weigh in on this issue before it drifted too much off topic. I share one cable internet conections with 4 primary machines, and have a DHCP setup with an extra hub so I can plug in laptops and stuff, good for my older machines and guest access, etc... I never had great success getting any of the windows machines to distribute IPs to the rest of the network, even though that was my plan (I even got an extra ethernet card for one of them.) After a week or two of headaches, I went out and bought a D-Link DI701 home router/firewall. Cost with the hub included? About $100. Time needed to set it up? About 20 minutes. Headaches averted? You betcha!

We used this puppy at work also, sharing access to several of our work machines pretty seamlessly. It even handles port redirection for the cammies, all running on different machines. Recently we replaced it with a big file sharing devive, a Cobalt Cube? from Sun. This thing cost about $1000, but it's a unix webserver, email server, firewall, file sharing device (for all our three OSes!), this little thing is packed, and it all fits into a cube 9" square. Oh, it also handles all of our IP redirection. Definite Geek Chic to be had here!

To summarize my advice? Spend the $100, buy a device. It's short, sharp and sweet, you'll be running in minutes.

the coolest thing about hubs is that you can plug more stuff to them ( if you have any open ports) 4 port costs like 20 bucks, but my opinion D-Links came up with this cool ass router that lets you share Internet Connection for $150 bucks! Firewall and everything included

heh...when I am in a position to have a major set up, I will certainly remember all of this great advice.
makes me wish I had the money to spend and the system to bother.

One thing to keep in mind here. DL is in the same situation as I am -- the only link available to the internet is a dial-up, with a line that won't support more than 28.8K no matter what modems you are using. He has a hub, with network cards in the two PCs already. Without a DSL or cable-modem setup, it doesn't make much sense to spend any money on a router. Certainly would not want to download files from both PCs at the same time over the dial-up connection.
