GRUMBLE: I am checking the Book of Revelations for mention of Palladium - nothing yet.

That really is pretty much the last straw and I'm now going to serious look into cutting down my use of MS goodies (I installed OpenOffice on my laptop and it seems pretty nifty) if they really go through with this they will face a huge backlash. The scope, scale and potential of this is truly scary.

You know Palladium is scary, but even more immediately I worry about the network infrastructure which is increasingly coming under control by a few megalithic corporations. If they decide they want to install "smart" network switches they could effectively control the Internet in any way they want. Thankfully the Internet was initially designed to prevent this sort of abuse, but don't think it can't be done.

The good news, of course, is that geeks are pretty socially aware on this level, and so with the help of hardware and software engineers everywhere it is possible to remain vigilant and keep a close eye on these greedy corporations before they have a chance to recast the digital revolution to their sick, profit-motivated standards.


Oh yeah, Palladium was the topic. I think it is only a threat if Microsoft can force all chip-makers to follow their standard. As long as their is an open-source out from Microsoft, then they will always have to give consumers what they want (rather than dictate what they 'want'). The future of the computer industry is at a very interesting crossroads right now where the future can be a freer, brighter society empowered by communication, or a dark Metropolis-like world where corporations control every aspect of human experience. Good time to be alive I'd say, let's make a difference!

I'm really hoping that Palladium doesn't make it, because if it does the whole internet is gonna just turn into one big thing owned by microsoft, which is quite possibly one of the worst things that could happen.
