I can't find the older threads on this but we did kick the idea of an Asylum Radio 'station' but there were complications like the need for a server, fancy software and Carp's fee system would have complicated matters (apologies to Nell for letting this fade - things have been a bit hectic).

However, a new P2P system might allow us to get around most of these problems. See this article:
www.guardian.co.uk/Archive/Article/0,4273,4467689,00.html

and the homepage is:
www.peercast.org

Thoughts? It looks like we should be able to get something up and running without too much hassle and overheads.

That's great emp!!! I'll have to look up more info about the network, etc

But as NoJive pointed out it hard to connect to it. I get every thing right what they say you get and I clicked the listen and browse buttons but I just get a HTML doc with:
http://localhost:7144/pls/Soma%20Tribute%20:ID2fbaab88 what?s with localhost??

I tried pasting it in to wimamp but no go :-(.

But I?ll have a look around

NJ & DS: This seems to be fairly 'cutting edge' (I didn't seem to find very much on Google at all) and the article suggests there might be some teething troubles. I've not yet had a chance to try things out - I've got a few things to do and then I'll have a proper go at sorting this out. Anyone had any luck with this? If so got any tips?

Emp: okey, I'll still try and connect again later today and see how it goes. I found these that might be a good read and look at:

streamer- an other P2P radio thingy, but don't know much about.

openp2p.com- a whole site just about P2P networking and other stuff.

They might help I don't know.

I just tried it again, that is... fired up the program let it grind away.... but after 15 minutes... nothing. I signed up at the forum and asked questions... but no response so far. Not suprising I guess when you consider there are only 64 members. I guess Emps, that what you mean by leading edge. <lol>

I followed it all through and it works pretty much as it says at the bottom of the page (as long as you let your firewall allow it to access the Internet and act as a server):

quote:
1. Download and run the client program.
2. PeerCast will automatically try and connect to the network.
3. Once connected, some channels should appear in the Search window. If they don`t after a few seconds, try clicking Find again. (You can leave the text box blank to search for all channels)
4. Select a channel in the Search window and click Get Channel.
5. After a short time, the channel you selected should appear in the Channels window and it will say RECEIVE to indicate that the channel is being streamed to your machine.
6. Select this channel and click Listen to open up the channel in your default MP3 player. Click Browse to view all channels in your web browser.

The page:
http://localhost:7144/

is just a page on your computer which lists the various channels you have.

Seems to be working OK - looks interesting (something did suck up all my CPU though but I have had a few problems at this end - I'll try again later) and when they release the source things should get interesting

Anyone given broadcasting a go?

[edit: NJ you were posting while I was playing there - I saw your problem: http://www.peercast.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=150
but it ran pretty much out of the box for me so no answers here]

I don't know for sure but I would suspect the problem at my end might have something to do with my connection. 56k which most often connects at 48k (which I'm told is the fastest *any* 56k modem can run... )but at times I manage to connect at 49 something (which I"m told has something to do with compression.) Anyway at the moment I'm connected at 46666.

Anyway.... I'm curious about how far along the 'server-lisitening' and 'lookup connected' numbers go for you ppl....*before* you actually see some channels pop up?

NJ: They reckon it works for 56k connections too but it does seem that that might be a bit of an overestimate

How far along? I'm not really clear about that but I start to see channels within seconds.

Emps: Sorry about not being clearer. "Server Listening- 1914s. The program's been running since my last post... and that's where the number is '1914' and counting but still no sign of any channels.

Perhaps as you say ' a bit of an overestimate.' <bg>

NJ: Hmmmm interesting as a quick test I opened it up and it got to about 78s and then just hung so I shut it down and restarted it and it connected in 8s. Have you a screenshot of what you see as I'm sure the first time around some things were missing from the connections window. I'd try closing down and connecting again a few times until something kicks in (not very technical I'm afraid).

This is all very interesting (although pos. not for you quite yet ).

Trigger: I'd recommend something like WinAmp and I use MusicMatch jukebox (which is a bit of overkill so I'll probably switch to WinAmp).
