No really. Look at it this way. The blocks surrounding "A" are white (or light grey), the blocks surrounding "B" are dark grey. That, mixed with the shadow of the cone produce the optical illusion.
That mixed with the LSD we slipped in your black pills

I think its something to do with your brain knowing its a white square with a shadow. Your brain nearly looks at it without the shadow. Like white balance correction on a digital camera.

I think Ive seen that effect before but a different picture. Its like in a room you have a white piece a paper and the room's light is tinted yellow from a crappy bulb, your brain sees it as white as it should be in natural light instead of tinted yellow/darker.
