Grumble: no, not a new paint job, just traded the old one in! No PS, just Illustrator, and a little spare time.

who decides the winner of a sig contest?

That would be the winner of last months competition....in this case, VP.

well the mathematical name i am familiar with is umbilic torus nc, but the name mobius ring seems to fit well also.

uhm... nice sigs & all (if not a little big) but what would that have to do with wheels?

that's the name i usually use. i registered here like a year ago before i used that name online.

No clue how this is going to look. Maybe later I'll animate it, but I'm sick of looking at the skins right now.

edit: Just as I thought. As soon as I get it up, I see where I can improve it. No matter how much local testing I do, it's just not the same as using it here.

I like man...

I used 3DS Max, just like my earlier sig. I grabbed the skeleton mesh from a friend's Poser 4, and chopped it up. Then I worked on the just the skull for a long time. (The nasal could use some more work.) By the time I got done fixing the mesh, I could have built my own. :sigh: Then I re-mapped it and skinned it (diffuse and bump). I don't want to look at those skins for awhile. The other objects were cake.

Do a bunch of renders and toss into PS.

I've got it set-up to be animated. All key-framed and ready to go. The bar moves and the eye rolls. It's kind of creepy looking. But I'm not in the mood animate it that small just yet. Besides, too many small things to fix and I'm tired of it right now. I might get to it before the month is over.

Wheels... Not to hard a word.
And it doesn't even look like the word orbit or rotation.

WJ => I think it would look even more creepy/evil if you added some redish/shiny colors to the pupil. Or maybe something like a shiny white eyeball with a "reptile" look.

I'm pretty sure I'm done with this. Normally wouldn't post this many versions for a sig comp, but I'm in unexplored territory. Thanks for the patience and all that crap.

Fixed the nose. Woohoo for that. Tweaked the maps, but a lot of the subtle 3D stuff was lost when made into a sig. Because of that, I've learned more about 3D to PS transition. I even learned a few things about animation opitimization. For example, only the moving parts move; that is, there is a mask over the top, if you know what I mean. I also made it non-transparent, hence the cheesey outline in a feeble attempt to smooth out that bump. No transparency because file size jumps to 50k, and I want to keep it around the 20k mark. Few other things I don't want to talk about.

If I don't win this month, I'm still a winner because I learned a lot.


PS. My working folder for this sig is around 17 megs.

as you said in the other thread, this one could use a higher palette.
i think 64 colors arent enough for this one cause i can see the lines between the colors themselves.
especially the skin and the eye.

just a thought though: how about making the pupil expand and shrink as the gear turns.. kind of like a lens focusing (or something..)? That would be even cooler IMO...

For me, part of the sig challenge is keeping file size reasonable. While a sig is a work art (or can be), it's still a sig. Consideration and balance. My personal cut-off mark is around 20k. So I made some sacrifices.

I don't plan on adding dilation for this one, but it did give me some ideas for future use.

I think it's absolutely amazing, but I'd like you to add one small detail.

Oh, since I'm just wishing here. Lose the vertical black line on the left and make the BG transparent

Sorry, Nimraw, the transparency is not gonna happen. When I make it transparent, the file size jumps to 50k, even with 16 colours. I have no idea why that happens. I'm going to stand by my decision to keep it at the 20k mark. That could help me, or it could hurt me -- it's up to VP.
