Just found this awesome game. Its what I was hoping warcraft 3 was gonna be and man is it addictive! It runs on just about every OS too. http://www.wesnoth.org/

I've played it before!

tips:
-Don't forget to recall units at the beginning of the mission.
-Take a look at each units terrain modifiers
-Read the description, some units such as thieves have powerfull attacks if used correctly
-capture as many villages as you can, you save your living units(to be recalled) and gold for later missions

Oh, and there is a new release candidate out here. Maybe that'll fix the multiplayer bug, but single player is a lot of fun anyway

I'm stuck on the third one of the solo game (where you arrive on the island).

I played Lacuna tonight online which was good fun (I'll let her tell you the result ). Its pretty quiet on the dev server. 50 turns took a couple of hours (including passing insults on ICQ) - I'd suggest going for 75 as 50 wasn't quite long enough.

I do feel like I have got a bad reputation now

It wasn't part of some evil plan but we were both trying to squeeze down a neck of land and I had far more troops than her so I took the opportunity to kill them - it strikes me as fairly sensible.

And yes it would be quicker if we hadn't been messing about and doing other things (the advantage of being on ICQ - what if you were playing a trnager and they got an urgent phone call or had violent diarrhea?).

Just a quick note - the 0.6RC version keeps being updated and the server only accepts the very latest version which often isn't available for Windows so if people want an Asylum game its best to go with 0.5 for the moment.

You're right Emps. They're up to the 3rd one right now. I believe they're working on some multiplayer bugs and some new single player scenarios. I don't expect it'll be too long before the offical .6 is released. How about we try to set up an ozone game then? In the meantime you better get in some single player practice because I'm not gonna fall for any of your dirty tricks.

Fine by me - the servers are usually quite quiet. It is easier to coordinate if the other people are on ICQ too and then its easy enough to do (there are 4 places available). I've played with Lacuna a few times (but that is another story).

actually, i think 6 is a bit easier, imo. you have additional characters in 6 that weren't in 5.

It's pretty good so far, but I have no idea why you'd compare it to Warcraft. It bears far more resemblance to classic console strategy games like Langrisser and Dark Wizard. Which I loved, so this is pretty enjoyable for me.

edit: Hmm, but I really dislike the heavy role that luck plays. Percentages come out in the long run, but that's not how I want to run a strategy game.

TBB: In your first recruiting make sure you get an archer and a horseman and send them up and round north of the river. Send a mixed group of archers and fighters south and grab some more villages. Let his troops come to you for a bit somewhere in the middle (near a village) and make sure that when you are fighting a unit surround it with as many troops as you can to kill them quickly (make sure you use the bow when attacking with archers). Eventually his initial cash will start to run low and you can start moving up and taking more villages. If someone gets down to the low yellow or red region retreat them to a village to heal. You lader need never leave the Keep.

I'm having problems connecting for an online game, anyone else have this with the 0.6 version? I have just tried again and it says "This server requires ver 0.6, while you are using 0.6.0".
I'll go back to the website and check.

TBB: No worries.

I think they have boobed as there is no way to connect for the multiplayer that I (or Lacuna) can discover. The 0.6 release was full of bugs so they are rushing out 0.6.1 so we'll probbaly have to wait for that.

well, one person setting up the server, the other giving the first person's ip address as 'server' worked for me.
This needs an ingame chat, though.

Oh, and the map editor is awful... Must see if I can't spare half a dozen hours on the weekend ;-).

6.1 is out now, but I don't know if the server is running it yet
