Topic: more css trouble (Page 1 of 1)

I'm using a three colum layout on a css site I have in the works. Please ignore the horrible graphics and colors,
first I'll focus on the technical problems, and then attempt to make it look nice. =)

The problem I have is the sign in colum on the right side of the screen. In IE5.5 on some of the pages it lines up perfectly with a 0 margin in my css...and on some is leaves a wacky space to the side. It is the same peice of code on each page, included via SSI, in fact, all the code on the different pages should be exactly the same, only differing in content. If I change the margin to 13, the ones that are wrong now get fixed, but the ones that are right now get messed up.

Another weird thing is that they are only screwed up when the page loads. If you go to a messed up page, and then click back and then click forward...it lines up properly. If you are on a page and the problem is showing,
you can open IE's options menu, change an option, click cancel, and it fixes itself! It has to be something about the way the browser is rendering the css...but I sure don't know how to fix it.

Also, the member login is controlled by vbscript...once logged in it shows your user name and user access level...but in Netscape 6, the css border only goes around the non vbscript text part, and leaves the login boxes out in the open. Any hints?

(I have no idea if the site even shows up in opera or ns4, I still haven't had time to do much testing.)

clevergeek: Your problem intrigued me but I can't simulate your browser problems. I've checked the site in Op6 and IE6 and it has worked fine for me no problems like those that you report - just a slight unevenness with the top of the boxes in IE.

Sorry I couldn't be more help there (I can't grab the source to see if anything is going wrong with the code either). You might want to think about upgrading or trying to fix it if other people can't see the same things. The NS problem might be due to a lack of height (or width) in the surrounding boxes.

Oh and it would be remiss of me not to raise an eyebrow or two (and shake my head) at the idea of breeding little furry creatures to feed to big scaley ones - I should point out that the links to ethics papers is (ironically) broken.

I think I fixed the main problem by accident...by taking out some javascript (although I still have no idea how the JS was affecting the css layout).

Hrm. Should I need heigth and width if the eliments are still inside my border'd <p></p>'s? I just don't know all the quirks of the CSS yet...I'll try to play around and get it figured out.

Feel free. =) I've delt with people that do much more than raise eyebrows and shake heads...more like scream and curse. The fact of the matter is that big scaley creatures eat little furry ones... Unless you're vegan or vegitarian, I'm not sure you technically have much right to raise the eyebrow...the beef and chicken commonly eaten (at least here in the states) is raised in much worse conditions than my mice and rats, and are generally killed in a much less humane manner. The ethics papers are not up yet because they are really a side project. I've already decided my ethical stance...which should be evident, given the existence of the site. *g* I just thought they would be nice for people that haven't given the issue much thought.
