this is a fairly quick site i did for a friend of mine, just wondering if there were any comments people had on the design. the only niggle i have with it is i haven't really been able to get the image galleries to display as i'd like them. i'd like a row of boxes with each image centered in each box, but all attempts have failed. otherwise, it's simple i know, but i wanted to showcase the images, and what's more most of the work was in the php to make it all run. well thanx in advance...

I'm glad to be able to say this:
Interesting design! That was my absolute gut reaction!

I like the way you managed to take something that's really quite simple and straightforward and make it interesting to look at by using small simple steps.

The design in itself both places a good emphasis on the navigation and lot's of room for the content.

Some quick thoughts:
The colors go well together, personally I'd go for a slightly more "pastel" feel of the bg, a wee bit lighter blue might reduce the very slight clash that blue and yellow tones can produce.

The only problem thing I see is that in the page "galleries" the design falls apart when you don't have enough images. If I were you I'd start listing the images further down, perhaps even as far down as the extension of the bottom border in the menu. Just as you start the first line of text on the about page. That way you can extend a natural line of the page for the eye to follow.

Other than that, nice!
Now just make sure you finish the site!

wow, i wasn't expecting such a positive response. i've experimented with some different colours for the background, i think it's a little better now (and i've fixed the other problem, with the galleries), see what you think... only two small things now: http://quis.coolfreepage.com/photosite/index.php?display=true&photo=queens.jpg
looking at that under IE6, the size of the image breaks the layout, is there a way i can make the title bar stretch to fit? the only other thing is that i'm not sure about the title itself. i love the font and colour, but it seems a little uninteresting, any suggestions?

I don't have the time to experient right now, but it seems like the div holding the image expands by itself scince the image is too wide and the top can't follow since there is no relation between them.

What if you enclose the contents with an outher div, then set all widths in relation to that?
I'm guessing that if the pic forces its own div wider, it would then push the outhermost div wider, thus forcing the top div to adjust its width in relation to the outher div...
Am I making sense here (I'm a wee bit tired...) ?

no luck with that... so instead i just gave the main content div a top border, and that looks ok, so i think i'll leave it at that now and hand it over to my friend for her to put the rest of her photos on it. thanks for your help
