If this is off topic in here just shuffle me off to my rocker....

I'm about to move up to Win98 frm W95... scarey huh? Now... from a 'users' point of few... which browser/zz have proven to be the most stable overall.

Are there specific plugins that are an absolute must? Some to be avoided at all costs?

I've read a 'lot' of the posts here but from a 'user-stupid' pov... it's hard to sort thru all coding info and come to some sort of conclusion.

Say you were going to set up your mom with her first computer.. you would make sure that 'puter had

browzer _____ version___

thnx... back to my rocker. (shuffle shuffle)

If you're running windows 98, just use IE. It should come with '98 and it's really the best you can use for a windows OS.

If you want to be able to write HTML pages and test them in different browsers, then you'll have to get those browsers separately...

Thanx Slime... that's pretty much what I wanted to know.

Reason for asking was... that i run a pretty flakey system. have put it together as best i can with a whhole lot of help... but it still crashes everywhich way but sunday.... and when I make this big step up (lol) to win98 i'm just trying to avoid, as much as is possible, potential grief.

As for the of writing HTMl...i am veery much interested... i am however at absolute ground zero and it will therefore be some considerable time before that becomes an issue... and i will just continue to lurk here and hooover up as much as i can.

thanx...

i also can recommend winME! it seems to be more stable than win98, plus it comes with IE 5.5 including the most common plug-ins.

btw: it also comes with windows movie maker, which is a good prog. for starting to create streaming movies.

Aarrgh, I hate to admit it but they're right. As much as I hate WinME, and i REALLY hate WinME, it is much stabler than Win98.

However, if you know what you're doing, Win98 is good. If you're gonna go Win98 then go with IE, just because Microsoft put big money into making sure they meshed well.

As far as your system goes, you shouldn't have any problem. I had an old AT form factor (that's real old) comp with 64 M ram and a k6-II that ran 98 and IE 5 beautifully.

Also, if you're coming from Win95, the Win98 interface will be much more familiar than the WinME interface, which is patterned after the Win2K interface.

nah.

You're all wrong.

Windows just released a new version... combines Windows CE, Windows ME and Windows NT.

They call it Windows CEMENT.

for a low end system, id recommend opera. unlike the "big boys" in browsers, theyve got some nice options like being able to turn off images (this one is toggled by a button in the tool bar), turn off javascript, and a few others. its pretty fast, too.

opera is available for most operating systems as well. mac, win, *nix.

I don't want to start a browser war, but most pages are coded for IE (fact, folks) so you might be better off with that.

If you do get it, I'd recommend not installing flash and/or disabling java. That will give you the stablest performance possible. And turn off page transitions too.

Thanx ppl...

Max... reason for not going to latest ME... quite simply is $$ otherwise i would

I'm running an AMDK6 2 overclocked to 300mhz 128mg ram... i'm sure the overclcking accounts for some of the instability.. but i live with (lol)

As for 'Flash'... I have never.... not once been able to get into that site to d/l it.... so I have NO idea what all the hoopla's about. (sidebar) I've also never been able to get to any links here that lead to 'geocities'... notta a one.

My big upgrade <bg> will likely come this weekend... so if you don't hear from say...by 'bout tuesday... you'll know
that things well.... didn't go all that great. Good thing I laff a lot!

Great info thanx again....

Just one small suggestion. Since you'll upgrade to the Win98, make sure that you upgrade to the Win98 Second Edition (it's build number is "4.10.2222a").
