Topic: how many layers in netscape?? (Page 1 of 1)

wow this is kinda frustrating. I'm working on a new site here and it was fine in netscape 4.5 one moment, and than I blinked and it went all over the place. I thinking that netscape doesn't support up to 7 div layers (which I found kinda strange). Can someone help me and explain to me why ns doesn't seem to like this??

Well I get the same results in IE that I do in NN4.7 which is not a good result.

The blue banner is almost in the middle of the page and . . . well I am guessing that you know the problem.

I can not access your style sheet to see if the problem lies there, which it just may.
Put your script external. I had a hard time sifting through all of that code to find the layout stuff.

I don't understand why you have divs and some are using classes and some are not and then you have tables in there too. Are the divs at the top using positioning? Like I said I can't get to the style sheets to see anything there. How 'bout opening them up so I can see that.

OK, I just got into the style sheet.

You have this: "<div id="sitenewsgif">" (and a few others) as the first thing after your body tag. Then you have a table with a couple of other images in it. As for one thing, there are no tags defined in your style sheet called "sitenewsgif".

You need to clean this code up quite a bit. You are using absolute positiong for some elements and then some tables for layout. This is going to be one big headache for you and in turn give you some crappy results. Pick one and then stick to it. Please don't mix the two as far as layouts are concernd.

Fixing this will probably give you a better result and I am betting on it.

Well I ended up redoing the page using @import styles so it degrades somewhat functional in nn4, Take a look at it here . I'm just starting to play around with dreamweaver and div layers so I wasn't sure if I should have made the top table and the nav table div layers as well. Also does nn4 support forms??

Now I just looked at it in netscape6 and it looks like complete crap...Is it because of the layers/tables combo??

Yeah I think that ya got a problem there sparky. Try to do the page using tables for the layout and not worry about the CSS stuff except for the font stuff and not the absolute pos. stuff.

Well that just bites..., I tried it with all div layers and the same result. I think I should just listen to you C.

But I really want to start implementing div layers, although it seems netscape 6 doesn't like it very much. Whats up with that? To what extent does netscape support div layers?

To my knowledge Netscape6 supports Div's just fine. I swear your problem is just the fact that you can't mix the two (tables and positioned layers)

actually I did this in all div's but it also came out kinda funky in netscape 6 and also ie 5.5. So I ended up doing all tables here and that worked...

except a few spaces where I don't want them. Hey C:/ do you have links to any websites you've done. You seem to be on top of things and I can always use some inspiration.

Well, the only website that I have up right now that I have worked on is one that Karl and I are doing. http://www.azprogolf.com
I don't even have my personal site up yet I have been toying around with what I really want to do.

I am working on a site as a file searcher that should be up this week end.

The only reason that I seem to "be on top of things" is because of this forum. I owe a great deal of thanks to the people here. I read just about every topic in the scripting stuff forums. I have a huge note book with code snippets and they are also saved on my box at home. I read a lot and I look at a lot of code.

The same problem that you are having I once did. My first website was REALLY bad. I can remember people like DL-44, Krets, Dracuiss and twitch responded. None were real flatering but ended up being VERY useful.

I remember Krets just responded "This is not a happy site my friend"
Twitch told me "pick one or the other but don't use both!"

Learned a lot along the way and practice practice practice. I have a lot of "templates" that I have done that I got the idea from Doc. when I am not working on an actual site I am making templates. This has worked out great.

This idea of using templates is something that the company that I work for has taken to doing. We had a problem that a lot of our advertisements were looking really crappy and the same. I went to the production manager and said "Hey, when I am not really doing much in the way of websites, I make templates that I can use for later" Showed him some stuff and now they do it for ads. Worked out great.

yeah, I've been to az pro golf several times for reference. I didn't realize that you had a hand in it. Very clean. And I like the collapsable nav boxes. Are we able to use this code leaving the credit to you?

The code for the collapsing menus is not mine. Credit "should" be there. If not then let me know so I can put it back in.

That layout is actually mine. ZOX had some hand in it but I did the initial layout and stuff. Glad you like it.

If you look at the way the tables are nested it is something that I use A LOT. It is essentially a "body" table that will lay out the other tables. So you have one BIG table that will "hold" the other tables. Know what I mean?
