Recentely someone said never to use negative z-index, -1, -2 etc, i cant remember which post it was from. I was wondering what the reasoning is behing this and what problems it causes, anyone know? - Thanks

Well, I do know that according to the specs, boxes may have negative stack levels. I would imagine, though, that there is a (or possibly more than one) browser out there that screws this up. This is usually the case.

I don't know any specific reason not to, but I also can't imagine any possible need to do so.

You have an endless supply of positive numbers

I generally start my 'base' z-index at 1000, and work in increments of 100, leaving plenty of room for things to be stacked beneath and in between in the future.

Interesting, well i've tried them in the versions of Opera, Mozilla, I.E 5.5 & IE6 that i have, and no problems. So im wondering why it was said, its interesting though, if i put somethings in the same layer as index 1 , 2, it does something different to if i put them in as , -1, 1. I think ill look into it a bit more
