Is it possible to put a tag in your website code that prevents your website from being picked up by other sites weblogs ?

In other words, when i check my weblogs i can see where people have come from to get to my site, but i dont want my website to get picked up by the same methods ? Does this make sense ?

Many thanks

The short answer would be - No.

Although referrer can easily be faked, or blocked by tools that "protect privacy", all web browsers should (and they do) send HTTP referrer field...

Using a JavaScript popup instead of target=blank will kill the referer in IE/Win:
http://development.gurusnetwork.com/discussion/thread/2196/

You could also use some kind of redirect script that blocks incoming links but not outgoing ones but that only seems to work in some browsers. Its also possible you could use on of those URL shortening services to create an indirect link to the other sites which would mean your referer wasn't what would appear at the other end.

A combination of that might block things in most browsers but........

Such a thing is really annoying, a waste of your time and I'd rather try and work in the other direction and get the referer working in all browsers. Why wouldn't you want people spotting the referer? I'm always picking up interesting things that way (sites that link to useful sites might in turn be useful or link to other useful sites). What could you be up to that you don't want people finding it?

Its hypothetical question Emps, there is no site, i was asking the question in order to settle an arguement with a friend of mine, he states that it is impossible, but i am sure that no matter what method it involves, it can be done.

axleclarkeuk: Ahhhh right well you can deploy a range of techniques which should kill the referer in some browsers but without a lot of effort (adding your links to one of these redirect services) I doubt it is really practical.
