In both IE and Firebird if you use the css background attribute to give a background colour to, for example, a h2 then this doesn't show when printed. Is there a way to give the h2 a background colour without resorting to just whacking an image in there? I've tried absolutely positioning an image of the colour inside the h2, but to no avail.

Both IE and Firebird have a setting to allow - or not allow - printing the background. I don't think there is a way to bypass this feature if the user chooses not to print the background. Even if there were, why would you not allow the user to choose what she/he wants?

I think that might have to be the route I take but there are some complications:

1. The project is for a school yearbook, it's a template to produces a profile for each member of the year so it's intended for printing. I know that HTML may not be the ideal medium, but it's the easiest way of allowing the team to process a few each, cutting my workload.
2. The computer labs at school have restricted access to tools/internet options in IE, so users can't change this setting.

I was just curious if there was a CSS hack, probably using an image.

If getting the background to display is really that important, using an image may be the only solution.

Just for the heck of it though, try adding "!important" to the end of the style rule, and see if that has any effect. On second thought, probably not, since the user stylesheet probably uses that also, and user styles should always override author styles. Ah, well.
