i'm playing with a variety of video stuff right now, more playing with after effects and some 3d stuff at the moment. here's a recent experiment.

as far as reading, i've got a book called transitions that's kinda interesting, just a bunch of essays by different film folks on digital editing and various aspects of it. i'm also reading rebel without a crew by robert rodriguez which is about the most inspiring thing i've ever read, amazing stuff on how he broke into hollywood with a $7000 film. maybe not directly related to what you're looking for, but incredibly inspirational and HIGHLY recommended.

Mostly I just muck around with video for fun, and still using my old Pinnicle DC10+, but have been looking to get a different card or new DV video camera. Love Vegas it's realy cool and works well, I have had it a while now, still using version 3, as 4 had nothing I needed, thou the color correction would be nice. But it does a nice job of compositing. I may upgrade upgrade once I get the DVD writer. Just picked up DFX+ with my lightwave 8 upgrade and looking forward to playing with some compositing and titling. I would realy like to play with doing some mock movie credits, or trailers. That's what I have always wanted to do for a living.

all I can say after a few hours of messing around is .. oh my gawd! Im very familiar with ACID as I use it for my radio station
gig and the learning curve is, well, there was no curve aside from the video encoding and having to learn about different formats
and standards.

I did a sample, but it's going to take a while as my POS system Im running it on is only a P3 400 w/256 ram.... works but its really slow.
The color correction makes a big difference, it enhances the footage to give it much more life and depth.

I will post the demo i did a little later!!

dam that is slow I bet, I have a AMD 1.4 and editing the comercials out of a 45 min babalon 5 took about 7 hours to render to videoCD. I should have captured as VCD resolution I guess.

one question though,
If i had a certain section of a movie say the fight scene from matrix and I wanted to extract just that part and overdub new music to it,
how would I go about doing that? Would it be easier to just run the dvd player into my dv camera then into the pc? or will the macrovision
screw that up?

I wanted to make a collage of some movies, kind of like a trailer with some fat beats behind it, thats all....

I use Premiere and After Effects with my canon gl2.. i've done some short pictures, some live video at local concerts and stuff, and some other little projects.

one book that i like is Transitions: Voices On the Craft of Digital Editing.

All I use is Adobe After Effects for editing.

But for capturing I use Virtual Dub A very awesome lite program that does everythign you need to fix up files before editing -- especially good for converting over to better-encoded avi files

That's my two cents!
