AFAIK Cold Fusion MX isn't a web server, it's a server side technology or server side language.

Running a web site from your computeris a hugely complicated task, and I'd strongly recommend against it. Firstly it'll slow your average desktop computer down to a crawl if the site gets even a modest ammount of traffic, secondly it'll open up security holes on your computer left right and center, which you'd kneed to know a lot about network adminstration to keep ontop of, and then if you wanted to use an actual domain name you'd got a lot more headaches to deal with.

This is what we pay hosting providers for. There a re quite a few around (man of the asylum users personal websites, along with the asylum itself is hoster by www.dreamhost.com whome are currentl having a sale with ond of thier hosting packages) although dreamhost dosn't offer cold fusion support, it's more of your typical LAMP host (Linux, Apache, MySQL & PHP) but you can find hosting providers that offer Cold Fusion. However I believe they're usually a little more expensive due to the licence costs that Macromedia charge for the cold fusion software where as PHP is free and in most peoples eyes, a more capable server side language.

There are also free hosting providers, but generally you get what you pay for, and given that CF has a licence fee attached to it I doubt you'll be able to find a free CF host. That said, you can usually get a decent web hositng package for just over $100 US a year, which really isn't that much in the grand scheme of things.

Yea im at school and we have what i think they call an OC3 connection which is really fast. The only people who will see the link to my site is the people who get the link from my aim profile so that wouldnt creat to much trafic.

Question for Boudga...how exactly do I set up a dynamic dns and host the site from your computer using Apache . As you can see im new to this and im just trying to learn the ins and outs.

thanx for the help..

I can answer that...
For dynamic dns try http://www.no-ip.com/ .
I use it myself and I had no problems.
For apache point your webbrowser to http://www.apache.org and follow the
install instructions.
If you have any questions just ask them here!

Too much to ask? Probably, that's why they make software manuals.

But Apache can be beast to get running. If you're using windows you can probably find a windows installer package for it around somewhere that'll set it up for you.

I use PHP Dev which is an installer for Apache, PHP & MySQL, cause I'm too lazy to set everything up myself. You can get PHP Dev from www.firepages.com.au but if you want to do Cold Fusion MX coding, and it's for school or university then chances are your school already has a server setup on it's network with everything you need. Ask your schools IT services/support and they should be able to tell you what they have and what you have access to.
