it's all a mixture, some programs have some of the good elements, some have others. Personally I like the interface in MAX, but the Global Illumination and caustics ability of Maya and Softimage. Lightwave I haven't used much before. SOme people say Infini-D isn't very good, but to see how good it can be, go here... http://www.rustboy.com

Well, I'll tell you right now that LightWave is a FAR more efficiently written program than Max, on your current box it'll run great. Program really is a personal decision tho, I like LightWave while others prefer Max. Understanding the principles of lighting and surfacing, as Rustboy illustrates, is a whole lot more important.

As far as hardware, your video card won't do anything for your rendering speed, it'll simply increase screen redraw. A new CPU will be the biggest boost, if you're looking to run Max I'd suggest a P3, if it's LW I'd go Athlon. More RAM always helps too.

I'm simpy blown away that Rust Boy was created with Infini-D.
I had a taste with using the app but never came close to creating anything
that complicated in modelling or the effects he has achieved.
Great stuff!
He did mention Carrera, is this where Infini-D 4.5 left off?
and what happened to Metacreations.....is this owned by Corel now?

Metacreations still exists as a company, but they sold all their product lines. Corel owns many of them, but not all.

@Fig: is Lightwave optimized for Athlon and Max for Pentiums?

@Ini: You might want to read that one here
2 Weeks ago I bouhgt an AthlonC 1.4Ghz and I'm very satisfied with the rendering times. I'm currently using Brazil (Splutterfish.com) as my rendering system in Max. Compared to my previous configuration (similar to yours) I'm very happy right now (eventhough some Dual PIII 1Ghz wouldnt be to bad ).
Concerning your graphics card you should read the above mentioned FAQ. But I can tell you that I'm very happy with my Geforce2. I can display around 150'000 polygons in the viewport in shaded mode and work fluently. And I think thats quite enough for a amateur like me.

cheers, Tw!ddleFinger

Ini: Do you have a link to that Sun guy's work? I mentioned I was interested in seeing what GL Open could do with landscapes esp. generated from GIS data and I've had a look around and there are projects looking at this the main one seems to be GLand which is a tricky one to track down using search engines!! The main site was also down when I tried it so if you know of anything else along these lines then let me know.

I've also tracked down a number of sites describing the use of POV Ray to generate 3D landscapes from GIS data (DEMs) so I'll probably be back here at some point looking for help at some point!!
