Had a spare moment tonight (rare as those are), so I decided to play with the latest alpha of Brazil:
bunny

Caustics don't seem to be working that well, so I avoided my trademark glass. This is just a glossy plastic kinda deal.

just besides that the image is perfect where is the big difference to the brazil engine? i guess this one could also be made with the regular engine.

Mainly in the shadows and lighting. There is only one light in the scene.

Here's the same image with the default Max renderer (except I turned off reflections, for speed):
Non-Brazil bunny

Note that the shadows are jet black, and the dark sides of the objects are totally unlit.

I could, of course, add lights to the normal Max render to light it properly, but I'd never get those cool gi shadows (most visible directly under the sphere).

Admittedly, the scene doesn't really show off Brazil's power. I was just playing with the ground plane and the renderer settings

I'm definatley loving the brazil bunny better. Every picture I've every done with Brazil though has turned out all grainy and stuff. How do you avoid this?

i haven't gotten to play with any of the Gi renderers yet, looking forward to using Arnold (which will end up being messiah:render) when it's released. Das, what're your render times like?

That one was like 3 minutes, and most of that was the reflections. Without the reflections, I think it was taking less than a minute.

He's improved Brazil a lot. Skaarj, have you used the new version? I don't get grainy images now, even with the default gi settings. I think he must have put in a smoothing algorithm, similar to what Lightwave did circa 6.5. The new ground plane helps a ton, too. Adding a ground plane used to increase render times by a factor of 2 to 10. This one is much cheaper, computationally.

I don't have an eye for this kind of thing so I can't really see any differences. I can understand differences in render time, but I can't tell visually.

Would somebody mind posting the exact same scene rendered in different renderers? I would really love to toss them into PS and use some Difference mode to scope them out. Or even turn Layers on and off and looking that way for differences. Be much appreciated.

edit: Nevrmind. I wasn't paying attention. Silly me.

@Skaarjj, you should definitely increase your GI Samples in case that you're using self-illuminated materials. The GI samples in 0.2.26 are set to -3 by default, that means only every ninth pixel gets a GI sample ray. The other pixels are simple blended afterwards and that is what causes those ugly artifacts (*twiddle-spits-on-the-ground*).
Check this out. I just love brazil!

@fig: could you tell me plz the url for the renderer you mentioned?

@warjournal: I'll try to get up some pics soon, I just couldn't figure yet a scene I should set up because the techniques are diffrent for each renderer. One scene might look awesome with the scanline engine and ugly with brazil/mentalray/finalrender and vice versa.

cheers, Tw!ddleFinger
