I've been working ont his for aaaaaaaages ,seems like that anyway. but the watch part of my AS 24 hours art coursework is starting to come togther now. The hands go round and everything. I thought i'd post a few shots for general criticism. Also i need to sort out my texture, cos to be honest it sucks. Anyone got any good ideas on brushed metal/shiny metal that would improve this.

Its my first complex model, ever. Hurrah!

This is a much nicer shot http://www.coleman.u-net.com/Folder/COOK%20copy.jpg I used the Cook Filter in 3d Max on this one. Which has kinda reduced my jaggies but its softened everything up a little bit. My antialiasing ability is poor. Whats the best way to get rid of those jagged edges for somethign like this?

Cheers guys.

That's pretty good. Is it a triangle mesh (what program did you do it in)? What are you going to do with it?

BTW, I don't see any jagged edges.

yes indeed. I can't see any jaggies on the smaller one or the larger one. I prefer the smaller one mainly because this is not a model designed to be viewed up close...there just isn't enough wireframe detail in it. Plus the smaller shot has a more fitting background.

Good work none the less.

Its all basically just box modelled and then mesh smoothed, curtosey of Max R3.1. Its for a short im making about time passing, its gonna be there ticking on someone's arm for 60 seconds, thats 1500 frames of animation [render time about 33seconds] so im gonna be rendering for a while. Any suggestions on the material?

I'd go with the brushed texture you currently have, but as a bump map. Add a reflection map. Color it gold-toned, to make it more interesting; it currently looks kind of like a grayscale image.

Just a suggestion, mind you. Might want to create a simple shape (meshsmooth a box, for example) and play with the material a bit. You get quicker previews that way.

Oh, and I can't see any hint of aliasing in either image.

Das i've tried adding a reflection map, the thing is it seems to want to calculate the reflections on every individual bit of metal with the map on. So it kind of takes ages to do anything , im planning on rendering about 2 mins of video, and since i didn't actually appear to make any difference to the finished shots i dropped it. Maybe i'm doing it wrong though. I'll try it on a box first. I kinda want it to be greyish though, its basically modeled on my own watch [a nixon wanderlust if anyone's interested] but then i strecthed a few proportions because it looked better.

Grumble, it took about 3 solid working days to model the watch, im working on the arm/hand which its on at the moment. I should have finished this ages ago but i keep doing actual painting [with real paint] as opposed to nailing myself to photoshop to paint textures. I think i could model another one from scratch in a lot less time. I just had to re learn a load of things.

As for the aliasing i think its because i've looked at it for so long im seeing things that arn't even there any more.

Reflection maps are very computationally cheap. I'm not talking about raytraced reflections; those would take ages with all the inter-reflections you'd have. A reflection map does wonders for making metal and glass look realistic.
