... and also my first *ever* model that I can call complete. Before I show it to you, let me just say: I am aware that it sucks. =)

Well, maybe it doesn't suck, but it has some major flaws, which you can probably pick out yourself. It's a model of my actual logitech mouse, with really bad textures. Modelled in Wings 3D, rendered in POV-Ray.

So, now that I've become good enough with Wings to make a decent model, I should give a review of the modeller, I suppose. It's better than any freeware modeller I've seen, but it's *weird*. You have to think about the model differently. I find that I end up making a general shape, then smoothing it, then adding more details, then smoothing again, and continuing like that. It's pretty powerful, but there are times when it seems like it's lacking a feature that you really need. I often have to backtrack to find another way to do something, but that's probably just because I'm new to the program.

It's difficult to make geometric shapes with it - then again, if I wanted to do something like that, I'd probably just model it with POV-Ray's primitives, as I've always done in the past. What it's really good for is organic shapes.

If you have no other modeller, it's worth the download.

Wings doesn't use splines. It works *very* differently than that. It's really weird, hard to explain. Search google for a tutorial on it and you'll get an idea of how it works.

This mouse took about two hours to model, if I remember right. The hardest part was the small grooves. If I had to do it again, I'd do a few things differently.

ahm, this might be a stupid question, but how exactly do you get your wings model into pov-format?
i only see ndo 3ds obj vrml and rib but no pov or inc.

and is the openGL preview eating up your processor too?

There's a plug in that does the exporting... it's not great (it refuses to just export the mesh, but also has to give you a camera and light sources with it, and forces you to have a texture in the texture_list and use it). Search for other posts on Wings in here... I think someone mentioned it a while ago. I forget where it was. You might be able to find it on google, too.

well i found it. thanks!
it was schitzoboy.

but: it doesnt output any mesh or so, just a camera and a couple of light sources.
and much worse: i cant save the file once i edited it in pov and it also crashes the whole povray program when i attempt to render it.

edit: its probably a version conflict between wings and the plug-in.

Yeah, it won't work with the most recent version, I'm afraid...

Shouldn't crash POV-Ray though. At the worst, POV-Ray should give you an error.

well when saving, i get EAccess violation.
and when rendering, it just crashes and winXP wants to send a report.

Do you have the latest 3.5 beta? Perhaps you should make a bug report.

All I've tried is Wings3D. I usually just model with primitives, since I rarely make any very complicated shapes.

Slime, Looks like Wings 3D is like Extreme 3D of years ago. Works with basic shapes. I like the mouse though.
