I would like to learn how to do 3D animation and possibly have a career in it. Where would I get training/education in the 3D programs? I've never seen a 3D major listed in any college catalog. Also, with 3D programs being so expensive, I couldn't buy software and try to teach myself. Anyone have any ideas?

look for special courses in your local area. (they may be expensive too )

for the software: you are right! very expensive. but there are free tools too! povray, strata3d, ...

I'm doing my training online at http://www.applied-ideas.com/trainingservice.htm
and http://complete-support.com/

The prices are cheap and the tutorials are very good. I would say to start there as you will only loose a few bucks if you decide to ditch 3D. But as for the art... well you will need more than what the online world can give you... you will need art classes. If nothing is near you... then take a few film classes. It will teach you how to set up shots and where to light and how to frame a shot, etc.

I still believe that 3D is still a bit new for every U. to have a degree made up for 3D anim. Maybe in a decade it will be common.
