A quicky google search got me to this site where they say a DDS file is a Microsoft® DirectDraw® surface. For what that's worth.

Yes...yes you do

It may simply be one of the many file formats that MAX can import or export. Export would be most likely, since .dds file formats seem to be DirectX components, probably for gaming architechture.
