ok, what do you think of it?

FYI: this is a power plug plus socket in my area and some other european countries.
except for the cable its just basic CSG.

problem: the metal sticks on the plug should be more silver but still reflective. dont know how to get this.

I made a similar material for a metal cup. The shader should be really dark almost black.
and it needs sharp highlights and a very high reflectance.
We have the same socket here in sweden too but I think your holes are to small... or is it me?

grumble nice work, a few little things hit me straight off,

1.the pins on the power cable, dont look metal to me almost glasslike, and the reflection looks make it look like those glass pill shaped buttons from the mac interface if ya look at it... try adding wear and tear to the contacts like scratches as if they had been pulled in and out of the sockets lots.

2. the two contacts in the plug itself look too thin.

3. i dont know if its the perspective that is throwing me off but the plug socket doesnt look square (the white plastic surround). Even allowing for perspective...maybe its just me...dunno

otherwise its a nice piece, ya may want to use a bump map or something to give the floor some depth, it looks too flat

To make the pins look more silver, try giving them a darker pigment (so you're relying more on the reflection for their color).

Does the carpet have a normal map? Try granite, and mess with the scaling.

olsson: the holes are exactly the same size as the sticks +0.05 i think.

tom1: you hit the point. that's why i asked.

tom2: yes, they are scaled sphere_sweeps, so its difficult to get the right thickness at right bend-angle.

slime: its T_Stone26. so already a granite thing. but its not using a normal_map. what exactly is this? and where does it differ from a bump_map?

Er, I just meant to use a normal pattern. Not necessarily a normal_map or bump_map. (I'm not sure what a bump_map is... does that even exist? If so, it's probably the normal equivalent of an image_map.)

ah. hehe, yes it uses normal finishes. (if that can be so said)

and bump_map is sdl 6.7.2.3

hehehe getting better, so anyway i went round my apartment and grabbed a load of leads, as we have the same socket here in the czech republic, and i fired it under some lights...

now i dunno if its possible to do in pov if thats what ya using... ????

but what i would do is have a bump map, with a polished metal look to it, look closely at the pins on a plug, the metal has nearly always got a grain running across the legth of it, 90 degrees across the pin (as in side to side) this might help to break it up, it still isnt quite looking like metal. the top reflection is way too bright. It looks like mercury in a tube now (if that helps description wise)

howabout changing the reflectice index on the metal, ie how much light it bounces back, if thats not possible try reducing the intensity of the light,

if ya cant recreate that brushed metal look you are going to have to tone down that reflection, its killing the image at the moment....

hehe floor looks better this time tho. or is it just my eyes freaking out

also i am not so sure about the corner in the room on this POV i think you would at least see some kind of sharp edge to the corner where the two walls intersect.

but its getting better, i am not trying to tear it apart i just wanna see ya get this right, this image has loads of potential....

Not bad. It seems maybe a *tad* bit overexposed around the socket (too much bright white), but otherwise it's nice.

yes, you are right. i tried to tone down the radiosity brightness, but that was making the rest of the scene too dark.

I would suggest rather bringing down the wall's pigment color (multiplying by .8 or .9 or something)

what exactly do you mean? the position or the material?

It does look a little too large to fit in the hole. However, I'm sure it's just that we don't understand exactly how it's supposed to fit since ours work differently. (I'm in the US, I assume Duck is also.)

Well...if you can;t tone down the radiosity...then simply change the colour of hte wall

well, they are exactly the same size than the holes.

the radiosity is very low already. but i think maybe the light is too bright.
