I am going to be taking a self-directed course this semester in college, and since I've learned PHP, I was thinking of ASP. Do you think its something worth doing a semester of self-directed study on, or do you have a reccomendation for another IT related course??

If I do decide on ASP, are there any really good books (I like the PHP and MySQL Web Development Book from Sams) that you'd reccomend?

Thanks

IMHO ASP isn't worth learning (especially since it uses VB as main language). But, if you really want to ge into ASP, I would recommend that you learn new ASP.NET instead.

BTW You should also consider learning PERL...

I've always ummed and arred about ASP. Lost of people tell me it's crap but there's soooo many jobs down here in brizi for ASP developers it's just not funny.

Still, I've only really touched on it and didn't think much of the whole VB thing like mr.maX said. I first started on Perl and Javascript, then moved onto PHP after too many perl headaches.

InI, yeah, XML is very sweet aint it. I picked up a book on it about four days ago, haven't been able to put it down since! Although I think I need to find a better book. I keep getting lost when the authour tries to explain the simplest of things. Once I finaly figure out just what the hell he's talking about I always seem to think it could have been explained a lot better.

You wouldn't happen to know any good simple (like I'm a 2 yr old kinda simple) online XML fundamentals tutes or guides online now would you? Or well written and up to date book on the subject?

I think Max's point about learning ASP.NET is very timely. Things like PHP and MySQL are good long-term goals because you know they will continue to be developed and supported. With Microsoft products, to get the most benefit you need to stay on the cutting edge. Whatever M$ is pitching to IT managers is what will be in demand, so ASP.NET strikes me as a great thing to know right now.

Thanks everyone..

I'm not really too "into" learning ASP, so I have been checking out Perl and XML. I'm really stuck with this, and I need to have some sort of proposal for a course outline by Monday. Right now I'm looking at anything thats Web related, but I suppose I could do anything IT related at all.

Just some more ideas of what to take would be great. I really like the suggestions and opinions you've given me so far, Its making things a lot easier for me

Thanks!!
