Does anyone know of a online bandwidth calculator? I'm trying to figure out how much monthly bandwidth would be necessary for differing amounts of users and usage amounts per user.

Hmm, I have a pocket calculator that I usually use for these kind of calculations. Does the site exist now, and get any users at all? You'll need these figures to calculate just how many pages an average user sees, and how many hits each one gets for this. Sorry, but there are just *so* many variables for this, how big is the page, how big are the images, how many, will the site re-use interface elements, how many of these pages will each new visitor actually visit, etc... Give me more info and I might be able to help you out with a roguh ballpark estimate, but for now? Somewhere between no bandwidth and a real lot, heh...

No, not an existing site (I'm doing some planning). And thanks for the reply, despite my not giving enough info at the time. I guess I would throw out the following as possible variables:

- Console-Style page navigation (Four or five basically static frames around one main content window that would change... a picture frame effect?)
- Graphics that would be cached/re-used for the main console frames would be... let's say... less than 60K total
- The content window pages would be plain with text... graphics would be no more than 5-10K at most I'd think
- 10,000 "visits" per day (visits consisting of maybe 20 page views, and viewing 5 videos @ 100K per video clip)

Would these estimates be enough for you to work with?

And again, thanks for replying... it is appreciated. (Excellent Website, BTW)

Hmmm....

lets say 80K for the main page load then 30K for each page load for the content window (HTML and Graphics)

(1 x 80 + 30 x 19 + (5x100) = 637K bandwidth per visit

637K x 10,000 = 6,370,000 K per day. or 6,370 MB per day.

Bandwidth is usually measured in bit's however not bytes so 8 x 6370 (8 bits to a byte) 50,960 Megabits of bandwidth per day.

Which is freaking huge.

I'm gonna say this though your numbers may be a bit optomistic. 200,000 page views a day (10K users times 20 views) is quite a large number for a site especially if it hasn't launched yet.

Oh and there's no real way to count for cacheing really in trying to estimate usage stats.

Bitdamaged is correct.

You can't account for client caching and proxy caching, which would reduce the load.

It's easier to project based on an existing site. You can look at current stats to see where the traffic is hitting your site, and calculate accordingly.

FWIW, the OZONE site averages about 25-30 Gigabytes/month, which is 5000 visitors/day, maybe 30000 page views/day. It was a lot worse until I moved the "handson" pages to their own domain, they account for another 8-10 gigs/month all by themselves. The Asylum isn't as bad a burden in terms of bandwidth, only 2-3 gigs/month, less images, more text, heh. All of my sites together use up maybe 50 gigs/month.

To put this into perspective with the assumptions made about this new site that hasn't launched yet, if you actually hit those goals stated you'd be doing about 191 gigs/month, pretty unlikely unless you've got some *damn* compelling content!

Anyone who wants to dig through my stats package for more info can follow these links...
