I am trying to setup VBulletin and having real probs. I am setting it up on my own server and have tried t install Mysql and Perl but it all confuses me death.

If we assume i have a clean install of Win XP, and have IIS installed what do i do next ?

Could someone please point me in the righ direction ie: What are the best Perl installation programs, best mysql installation programs ( the easier the better ), i have tried reading the manual, but my god !! talk about hard to follow.

Any help would be appreciated#

Thanks

axleclarkeuk: So its nto actually a vB problem (if you do have problems with that drop a note in here or better the GN as we have had fun setting it up and might be able to provide some help) but a problem setting up PHP for Win. This isn't too big an issue - see this FAQ for links:

Is it possible to install PHP/MySQL on my computer for offline testing?

See if they help - have a go with one of the resources there and then let us know how you are getting on and we can continue from there.

axleclarkeuk: Glad it proved useful. You may not need to uninstall anything as I believe you can run Apache alongside things like PWS (well I have them on the same computer I just make sure I don't have them running at the same time).

Well i wanted to uninstall everything first so i could start with a clean slate:

Stae of affairs, I HAVE IT ALL INSTALLED !!!! YEEESSS !!!, only took approx 10 mins from clicking SAVE to having run the tests on the server !!

Now that i have everything in place, its time for me to install Vbulletin !!! This is gonna give me a headache i am sure..

At present i have Yahoo Messanger running: axleclarkeuk <----- my ID

I also have MSN running : axleclarkeuk@hotmail.com <--- My MSN ID

I am hoping that if anyone has a bit of time and patience they could PM me and give me a bit of guidance, because right now i am on a HIGH and dont want to lose the buzz and hopefully get Vbulletin up and running tonight ( its 00:58 here in the UK )

If i can do this, i will volunteer for slop duty for a week.........lol

If not then i will start working on some question for people to assist me with.

You have been a great help so far, and if nothing else works, i am indebited <---( spelling ?) for that

thanks folks

axleclarkeuk: You probably need to start the web server - it depends on what you've installed, of course, but wih my installation (NuSphere) there were start and stop Apache icons which I dropped onto my desktop so I can start and stop Apache when I want to.

You need to read the information which came with whatever you downloaded.

By the way I have authorised your request on ICQ and am waiting for you to authorise me back

axleclarkeuk: I'm not really clear about what you are trying to do. Are you running the website from your computer or testing on your computer and then uploading to a server?

I don't appear to be authorised yet (you aren't on Trillian are you? People have had problems authorising me from there for some reason)

Ok i will try to make things a bit clearer..

At present i am hosting my own website on my own computer ( IIS ) c:\inetpub

Everything is working fine !!

Now what i want to do is setup VBulletin ( or any other similiar forum programs )

I have downloaded PHPDEV and it installed ok c:\phpdev

So now i have Mysql, php, mysqladmin installed in the c:\phpdev dir , if i place the VBulletin files into the c:\phpdev ( where i am not sure ), this is where i get stuck...

Damn i bet this not making anysense is it !!

I really need someone to hold my hand, lol

axleclarkeuk: That makes perfect sense

It sounds like everyhting is going well. What you now need to do is find the web root presumable within the phpdev folder and install your PHP scripts in there (if you know PHP is working then it sounds like you have uploaded a script into this folder).

For vB put all the files in a folder called something like forums, edit the config file to reflect you PHP/MySQL settings and run the install.php script and you should be up and running.

Hi Emperor, as you are aware, we had nightmares with this, and still no joy...

I have now uninstalled PHPDev and installed FOXSHERVE which apparently come recommended ( i am willing to try anything at this point ).

Everything installed correctly, ran tests and things were looking good...but then when i configured and ran the install.php script, exactly the same Error occureed, " You dont have PHP running, please contact..blah...blah...blah

I am running Win XP, root dir is c:\foxserv\www <----- i installed VB in a folder caled "forums" within that folder is another folder called " admin " in there is the config.php.new file which i have configured correctly, i then save that file as a php file and run install.php, and thats where the error occurs ( 3x on different installations this has happened ).....wondering if there was another problem somewhere else that maybe causing this.

If i am unable to get VB installed for whatever reason, would any of you good folk be able to recommend a good forum/community type applicaton that could replace it, that was fairly straigh forward to use ?

Thanks Emperor for your patience, just a shame we could not get it up and running.
