Or ask your questions in the phpBB Community.

Ultimate: Once you've uploaded the files and made sure you have a database run the instal.php file and that will prompt you to enter the MySQL details and it will do the rest of the work for you and then it will move the config file to the right place. Then when you start your forum it should all be setup and it will ask you to remove a couple of folders. Do that and you should have a working board. It is really straightforward.

Ultimate: OK - no problem. It seems easy to people who have done it before

So tell us what you have done?

Unzipped the file?

Uploaded the whole lot to the server (pos. changing the name of the directory to forums or something)?

Ran the install.php file?

Made sure the config.php files are in place?

etc.

If you let us know what you've done then we can try and go fromthere - one thing to do is make sure you have all your MySQL database details to hand before you start installing.

probably the dumbest question on the forum, but how do you create a MySQL database on the server? and how do you go about integrated more than one database into a MySQL database if that makes sense, I read that a MySQL database can contain many databases for different aspects of a site, all in the same file or whatever. This reply is relevant to this thread because I too have downloaded the same thing and I'm not sure about anything to do with MySQL which I think is probably the same problem as the thread starter is having.

The simple answer is that (if you are able to make a database - some firms ask that you request permission) when you open phpMyAdmin (or similar databse management systems - if you are just starting these will make things much easier for you) and there is an option to create a database.

Hmmmmm the straight answer to your question is that unless you are limited to one databse then you can just use the same process as above. However, addressing the underlying question.... it is wise to keep have just one database for the various aspects of your site (unless you want to run something completely separately from everything else - but this is a complication you don't need to deal with yet) and you then create different tables within that database to deal with various aspects of your site.

Hope that explains things a bit but never be afraid to ask a question

OK I suggested to Wes here:
www.ozoneasylum.com/Forum1/HTML/007195.html

that as there are a number of people trying to install phpBB2 at the moment that we make this a little workshop on that. We can then add this to the FAQ which might make life easier for other people down the line.

Soooooooooo the intialy things you need to do are make sure you have all your MySQL information and that you have the ability to create a database (even if your hosting includes MySQL it might still need to be activated) and that you know where your control panel and/or your phpMyAdmin are installed. This may in fact be the trickest part of the venture and varies from host to host so you should get digging now.

phpMyAdmin? how do I know if I've got that with my host and how do I access it? I have never used php before and wanted to try with my new host and so specified that my sponsorship deal sould include PHP and MySQL amongst a few other things to play with, trouble is I don't know how to play with them, also how do I go about testing PHP scripts on my own local machine? I have set up IIS for asp before in the past but have sinced ended that pursuit and moved to PHP instead, but to test PHP I need to Install stuff that all looks very confusing, what's the easiest option bar testing everything online?

I have no idea - that is something you need to check with your host. As I said they all do things different ways. I presume you have a control panel or at least a FAQ to refer to for this so check. If there is nothing but you have your MySQL info you can install it yourself - it is relatively simple and if need be we can run through this before we get down to the phpBB2 installation if anyone needs that.

And to test offline see this FAQ:

:FAQ: How do I install AMP (Apache/PHP/Mysql) on my Windows computer for offline testing?

There are plenty of packages which make this process pretty straightforward (there is a quick guide to installing one of them there).

N00BIE: The config.php file goes into the phpBB root folder so if you have it in:
www.domain.com/forums/

then upload the config.php file into that folder.

Unless I've misunderstood the problem.
