When I execute the command: '/usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqld --user=mysql &'

mysql shuts down and gives me the following error:

Fatal error: Can't open privilege tables: Table 'mysql.host' doesn't exist

and yes I RTFM.....

See if you can get it started with this:

code:
/usr/local/libexec/mysqld --skip-grant &

If it starts, check to see if the host table is there. I checked google but it didn't come with much of anything useful.
