Something's lacking. *sigh*
It's just a first try at a new sig.

yes yes yes, I like it fine

I want the text to wrap around the sphere a tad though and the flares all seem to be coming from behind the sun but hey, it looks really good.

Yep yep, I agree with JK. You need to soften the edges of the sun.

Select the sun. Select -> Border (I forget just what the exact command is, maybe select -> modify -> border), enter 5. Feather by 3-5 ish? Then guassian blur it. An alternative is to pick the average of the colors that make the flares, and the edge of the sun. Fill that selection with that color, and blur that.

Other than that, it looks really nice. Good job

What's the word I am looking for? Ah yes, ownage.
To make it look like the text is wrapping around the planet try and spherize outward and maybe resize teh text smaller, should do the trick. That is of course assuming your text has it's seperate layer.
I would like to see it a little smaller too.

I think if you add some edge definition to the text ( to add to *glassy-see-thru-thing*), and ( as JK suggested) bring some of the flares around the visible surface, then all ya gotta do is reduce it 40% and it`s a keeper.
Nice one.

Wow, thanks for the useful hints, folks.

JK, db: there was a slight problem when I flattened the layers, I guess I won't flatten them again, at least not when I'm exporting as a GIF or saving to web. Thanks though, I'll see what I can do with the edges and the flares.

Raptor: thanks a lot for the kind words - it's actually much like your e-d flare, with a little spice from the flares, which I'm still trying to pursue to show up the way I want them to.

HanShim: there's a neat tutorial that Raptor wrote. I haven't checked with GN to see whether it's there, but I found it over at eyeball-design.com, and it's perfect in my eyes. Kudos to Raptor for the technique, all I did was a little tweaking - and yes, that's all without external textures or outside filters. Just clouds, blending modes and a little bulging with the PS-internal filters.

Folks, thanks a lot for the help. I'll try to put it together now.
