Um. Yeah. It works, I suppose.

The only thing is, PNG's aren't very widely supported, and (as far as I know) almost no browser supports PNG transparency yet.

Well, there isn't really much to comment on, but a trip to this page wouldn't hurt much.

Mozilla, Phoenix, and I think Opera do. It's just IE that doesn't :-(

Yea, Phoenix is like a scaled down Mozilla without mail and so on. And, yes, Opera supports, it. At least version 7.

IE5 Mac has supported png transparency since it came out.

It's a pain to be able to see cool things on my screen, but not be able to use it since most of the world won't see it the same.

Good.

So, other than Lynx, what browsers don't support transparency?

IE/PC doesn't support PNG transparency, although it does support PNGs in general, and supports GIF just fine.

bingo.

I think many browsers support png, but far fewer support png with transparency.

It's a pity, because png with transparency can be awfully useful. The 8 bit png doesn't have many advantages over gif (other than not belonging to a corporate entity), but the 24 bit png certainly does have advantages. Image soft, translucent drop shadows, or round or rounded rectangular buttons with millions of colors instead of 256....

and the fact that you can work on the alpha channel to tweak the transparency without changing the actual image.

and it is better than gif (not for animation of course) in all aspects, as long as you don't use progressive encoding
