Playing too much DND and goofing off with mahjqa's mini tut, I did this:

I have to add my name in there I know, but I would like to see if anyone has a suggestion on how to make the flame look
like it is going "around" the blade instead of just sitting on top of it.

Thanks in advance.

It seems to me that the clouds layer needs a little bit more variation. I usually make my clouds pattern bigger, and size it down 4x of sometimes even 8x, so there's more variation, and smaller details. (I've added an example below) not like the flames flickering on and off. One simple solution I can think of for the sword; move it on top of all layers, and set it to 'screen'.

It's looking nice so far, though.

Pardon me for my ignorance, but something kind of confused me in your tut.

You said that:

quote:
Then I resized it to 128x64, and put several of them on top of achother

When you make the seperate clouds file, do you make multiple layers and then just adjust the layer modes? Or am I reading that wrong? Because if I just made one layer with clouds filter and then another layer with clouds filter, you would not see the one underneath unless it was set to "Overlay" or something.

Or are you just saying that you use the Clouds filter until you get something you like.

After it is all said and done, you then resize the clouds file.

Sorry if this is something that I am misuderstanding.

Thanks for your help and comments.

on top of eachother in this case meant:

..............................[canvas]..............................
-left............................................................right-

[clouds layer1]

[clouds layer2]

[clouds layer3]

..............................[/canvas]..............................

(all the clouds layers are the same. They're not on top of eachother layerwise, they're just merged together to form one big, repeating pattern. I hope this makes more sense)

And for the pattern of the clouds layer itself, there is no *right* way to do it. Maybe you could try laying two clouds layers over eachother and setting one to another blending mode, or using cruves or levels to adjust, it seems to take a lot of luck to get it right. Just try to make patterns with not too many balck 'holes' in them. (I must say that I myself still have trouble getting it right at times...)

OH! I got what you mean now. Damn. I just made it one big one instead of laying them out side by side.
Sheesh! I feel like an idiot

Thanks for the info!

Sheesh! I feel like an idiot

Don't. I made the exact same mistake the first time I tried to follow the tutorial.

Partially mask the sword so your flames begin on the sword instead the edge. The mask does not have to be fully transparent nor opaque on the blade.

I made an example of what I'm talking about below.
