Anybody else gonna join the fun? Expect my first contribution in about uh.. 6 minutes. (00 UTC) For those that may have missed it:

quote:
For raw processing power, I use the RC5-65 cracking challenge software at http://www.distributed.net/ - it's a fun way to show off your idle CPU power, and a great way to benchmark your systems, one simple well-written app to take all of your CPU and crunch numbers with it. By this measurement, my 450Mhz Mac is about 60% faster than my 850Mhz PIII, go figure. I've been thinking about maybe setting up a special Asylum team for cracking RC5-64, anyone interested? It'd be a fun way to show off our processing might, heh.

OK; I just set up a new team, the Ozone Asylum. FWIW, I'm crunching keys at a sustained rate of 15,090 KKeys/sec between all of my machines, go beat that, hah! If you want to join, sign up as a single user, and run the app on all of your machines as that user. Once your stats get into the database, you'll be able to join the team (after you've logged in) by following this link... http://stats.distributed.net/pjointeam.php3?team=885184470 - and once the stats get recorded tomorrow you can check your ranking at http://stats.distributed.net/rc5-64/tmsummary.php3?team=885184470 (Note! These urls probably won't work yet, they need a day to register the team.)
PS: My 2 macintoshes account for 80% of my keys cracked. I love my Mac!

Rinswind, cool. Looks like we ranked #825 for yesterday.. more members should bringit up a bit more.

Can't decide what I'd do with the cash on the off chance we actually find the key but I've narrowed it down to either a wacom and misc goodies or a dual monitor set up. What's everybody's opinion? Which comes first, the second monitor or the wacom?

You can view the team stats at this address...
http://stats.distributed.net/rc5-64/tmsummary.php3?team=885184470

You need to have sent blocks in before they do their big DB update at midnight, takes a couple of hours, usually. Once you're in the database, you can choose how you'll be viewable, nickname, email, or USER#362514! =) Heh, between all of my machines I crunch between 4600 and 5000 blocks a day, I'm *sure* someone has to be sitting on some big CPUs? Show off! Drop out the day after you put us all to shame, but have a day of fun!

Nevex- go to http://www1.distributed.net/download/clients.html then scroll down and find your specific platform and click either http or ftp to the right of it, depending on which way you prefer to transfer the file. Install the program, configure it to taste then follow Docs instructions in the second quote of the initial post of this thread. Welcome aboard!

Nevex.. the first post in this thread:

quote:
If you want to join, sign up as a single user, and run the app on all of your machines as that user. Once your stats get into the database, you'll be able to join the team (after you've logged in) by following this link... http://stats.distributed.net/pjointeam.php3?team=885184470 - and once the stats get recorded tomorrow you can check your ranking at http://stats.distributed.net/rc5-64/tmsummary.php3?team=885184470

Once you've run the program and completed some work packets you need to give it a day, then go to your stats page. From there you can click a button to have them e-mail your password to you. Once you have the password you can join the team with the link above.

El Grande.. you don't need an active internet connection to participate if that's what youre asking. I only connect to their server once a day to download new work packets and upload completed work packets. You can set it to any time frame you like.. a day works for me. CPU usage effects your results in the respect that you'll get less done the more you use your system. The beautifull thing about this app is that it doesn't compete with other programs for resources.. it uses only whats available at the moment so you can carry on as usual. The file transfers back and forth are quick and painless too. I'm on 56K.. but rarely connect faster than 50K. There's also a monsterously informative FAQ at distributed.net that can probably answer questions better than I, but I'm happy to help if I can.

Nevex, go to this page and enter the e-mail address you used to configure the client in the box at the top center of the page. This will bring you to your stats page. At the bottom of your stats page is a button that says "e-mail me my password" click that and your password will be sent to the e-mail you specified in the set-up. Once you have your password hit this link to join the team. The FAQ's are here if you have trouble.

Nevex that's strange. I had no trouble after a day. The only thing I can think of would be to make sure you entered the e-mail address correctly (no typos) in the configuration and that you have in fact "flushed" some work to them. Look under Commands>Configure>General Client options to check if the address is correct. Choose Commands>Update to send and recieve work. Sorry bout the slow reply.. kinda busy sometimes.

I think I might have figured out your problem, Nevex... I just solved it for myself anyway. Go to the main page of the site... you click on statistics... now, what I was doing wrong was I was looking under the OGR-24 stats... what I should have been doing was looking under the OGR-25 stats. Try that if you haven't.

Except we are working solely on RC5-64.. so as not to spread ourselves too thin. Go to Commands>Buffer and buffer update options, then you want choice 8 to look like so- 8) Load-work precedence ==> DES=0,CSC=0,OGR=0,RC5
Then of course you'll want the RC5-64 stats. Course if you wanna crunch on all of 'em who's gonna stop ya?

u-neek, make sure you're not running all of the different tests! They have 4 competitions going, and by default it'll share it's time between each. Go to the config, and follow 2) Buffer blah, and then 9) Load-work preference. Set that to RC5,OGR=0,DES=0,CSC=0 and it'll just crunch RC5, nothing else.

I was looking at the 3D forum, and moaiz' new black pill rendering, that took something like 19 hours to render. I wonder if it'd be possible to build a distributed 3D rendering engine? Think of the things we could do!

I don't know exactly if it's what you're talking about, but 3DStudio allows for network rendering... I always thought it was so you could network a bunch of machines and distribute the rendering process. I am probably wrong though, as is often pointed out to me.

Well I've tracked down the fastest computer in the building down and set it to work but I also am having a bit of trouble getting my password. My understanding is that you can summon your stats forth by putting your email in this URL:
http://stats.distributed.net/rc5-64/psearch.php3?st=doc@bugtown.com
http://stats.distributed.net/rc5-64/psearch.php3?st=cyoung@wildslide.com

But this:
http://stats.distributed.net/rc5-64/psearch.php3?st=emperor@evilemail.com

currently not giving me anything. Is it just that I have to wait a day or so? I know my contribution of c. 2.2 Mkeys/s isn't going to change any team stats (esp. as I'm off away from the computers for the weekend) I was just intrigued to know what this computer could do.

On the flush front running on an NT PC you just right click on the cow in the tray and select flush.

I'm not sure how the stats are worked out: it says that the good Doctor has been doing this since 19th August 2001 and yet has been working on it for 1400 days!!

Thanks for the comments - I can wait.

This is an interesting experiment to show what kind of power can be assembled by the Asylum (there are after all 1400+ people here - a small percentage of them all doing the same thing would be quite something) but the possibilities are far more intriguing. It would also be a nice touch if as a community we could help Inmates with occasional big processing requirements (if that is possible). They make some of their code available:
http://www.distributed.net/source

and they may be open to its uses in other projects. However, I don't know anything about the logistics of such things so it might all be unworkable (then again that's partly what this forum is about!!).

Perhaps (as has been said) a new forum (distributed processing) might be a good idea to throw around ideas and provided updates on Team Asylum's progress (I only stumbled across this obscurely titled posting by accident).

Just a thought.
