Figured I'd start a new stat thread to comemorate the new forum. What else we gonna talk about? I don't have a cat, but if I did it wouldn't like me much. Anyway, here's todays stuff:

Total blocks to search: 68,719,476,736
Total blocks checked: 99,043

Overall Rate: 20,514.39 kkeys/second
OZONE Asylum completed 7,853 blocks yesterday at a sustained rate of 24,398 Kkeys/second!
OZONE Asylum is ranked #588 for yesterday!
The odds are 1 in 5,941 that this team will find the key before anyone else does.
Actually I just wanted to take advantage of Doc's #3.. a rare opportunity siezed!

Argh, this is what I get for working from home, sure I'm comfy, and get to smoke while working, but now my machines at work are not doing what they should, power failure? Grumble, I need to do better than this! I should be a lock for number one, feh. <g>
I have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA what we should do with this forum really. We *could* talk about distributed computing, or maybe we could just hang out in here and talk about all of the others? I was thinking maybe we could strut up and down the corridors, sneering contemptuously at all those who are not a member of "our team", what d'ya say?
We could also stretch the mandate for this forum, seems we also should have jurisdiction over *all* P2P networking, like WinMX, Napster clones, etc... We can also lay claim to any of the Instant Message and chat programs, what else are they other than distributed computing, hmm?
Say, has anyone else seen this, from the old Bell Labs people?
"Virtual Network Computing", it's an application you can run on your machine that will allow you to run it just like you were there. It's got a viewer app, as well as Java applet for using your remote machine, and it works on all the major OS'es, Unix, Mac and Windows. They're distributing the thing as a GNU Public License, so it's free to use and modify. I use it now to run my old mac in the kitchen, it has no monitor, keyboard, or mouse, and is only accessed through VNC, pretty cool.

Looks pretty cool. Huh.. wonder how well my old Performa 476 would crunch keys. Wait a minute, I don't think I have the technology (outside of using modems) to connect the two. Been playing with the idea of running an ethernet cable to my kids iMac though. Hey, this could be handy. I could give him internet access and spy.. er.. I mean check the progress of dnetc.

Ooh, I used to have one of the old perfromas like that, I think mine was the 450, flat "pizza" case, right? Good solid machine, I'll bet it would crunch dozens of keys each day! <g> I've got my old G3 crunching keys, just cause it doesn't really have much to do, and it's kind of slow, but... I also have friends who have dozens of their old machines running this thing, some as far back as old 386's, and they do like a key every day or two, hah!
Say, you could run the VNC in "listen mode" only, then you really *could* spy, er, monitor your kids usage! And then go in later susing full mode and modify certain settings, adjusting things later.
This might be a dumb question, but my comp is on a T3 server, that has 2,000 people on it. Is there anyway that I could access "all" these for this project? We are on a network so I was just curious, I mean I don't want to hack into anything (Well besides what I allready have) to do this.

VNC, great program, I use it at home and work. I actually have 3 computers at work... #1 is my normal do everything computer, #2 is a Image server running ghost, dhcp, and anything else that helps me distribute images to machines, # 3 is a backup for #2 and also acts as an image server for the folks on the domain. #1 and #3 are on the domain, but #2 is not. There is however a peer to peer connection between #2 and #3. So I have VNC running on all machines, and that way I open up VNC viewer on #1 and look at #3 (over the domain). Using VNC on #1, I open up the viewer on #3 looking at #2 (via the peer-peer). That way I have control of all 3 machines from just 1 machine, pretty sweet huh? Ok, only if you can follow all of that anyway
At home I have two machines, one is a web server, the other my workstation, I use VNC on my workstation to administer the server (which has no monitor, mouse, or keyboard).

Unfortunatly I would be crucified for hogging bandwidth at work, and I'm on dialup at home, so I'm of no use to the project until I can get DSL where I live.

my guess.... dev-null does a lot of litestep stuff
either that or he's a skinner.... but I'm thinking litestep...
am I right...? do I win...?
c'mon mr. null, show yourself let me know if I should have just kept my mouth shut... or... uhm... my fingers off the keys, I guess..
and I'm agreeing with Doc... the reason I looked into this forum in the first place is because I thought it was networking in general... and while I really, really, like the distributed.net / RC5 thing, it seems like a small part of what could be done here...
ok, I'll take my dumb redheadedness out of here now

I'm dev-null. I have the client running on 4 PC's, 5 if my wife leaves her PC on. Drakkor, the client doesn't use very much bandwidth at all. I am on a slow 56k FR at work and you can't really tell that the client is running on two PC's. It puts my server to good use when I am not working on it. OK, Penny, I am stumped. What's litestep and skinner?

Kinda got out of the habit. We seem to be starting to level off a bit.. only jumped 83 places today.. I see we're up to 10 members now too. Wonder what percentage of all asylumites that constitutes. We could make a bad projection of the potential computing horsepower of the asylum overall? It'd be a lot o'keystrokes man!

Well, I got my Mac at work crunching on this again, that one machine accoutns for maybe 50% of all my processing when it's going full blast, with the other 50% covered by my other SIX MACHINES!!! Crazy, that dual processor mac is one fast machine. I'm waiting for the newest stats to come out, they seemed to have had some problems the other day, and nothing's been updated since the 10th, hmm...
I don't think we are leveling out (we are up 134 today) as we will only start levelling out when we start to see teams with a similar overall rate appearing in the 4 above/4 below table and that looks like its not going to happen anytime soon.
My guess is that we (I love my use of we - the Doc crunches more keys while smoking a cigarette than I will do in the whole project - although I've managed to get it working on processors I have no admin rights [only users rights] to so we'll see how that goes) will continue to rise like this for the next 20 or 30 days before the rate really slackens off and (unless someone wins) then we'll eventually stabilise somewhere in the top 2,000 teams. Anyone wish to have a friendly wager on this? the book is now open - I'll go for 1,799 (given the addition of a couple more inmates with reasonable computing power). Any takers?

Ah but we used to climb thousands of places a day. I'll put my guesstimate at 2362. No way I'll put money on it though.

We are climbing, for yesterday we ended up in what, #463 for the day? We've got thousands of teams that were real big back 3 years ago, but today they do not much of anything, I'm pretty happy with the results.
Current Rank: 6,002
Total blocks to search: 68,719,476,736
Total blocks checked: 180,229
Days working: 25
Overall Rate: 22,398.08 kkeys/second

OZONE Asylum is ranked #463 for yesterday!
The odds are 1 in 4,860 that this team will find the key before anyone else does.
Remember, this is #6002 for over the last 3 years, and we've been at it 25 days now. I'm just happy to have my work Macintosh back to crunching, that one machine does more than half my keys, crazy.
The thousands a day was just us burning of the small fry (that sounds unpleasant) - largely solo 'teams' who signed up put in a few days work and haven't done much since. Its is this more gradual climb up through the middle ranks that is more significant and is more of a sign of the processing power of the team. I suspect where we end up will depend on how long the problem takes to fix. Some random thoughts:
Now that is serious member numbers - we really need a good 'the Doc needs you' style campaign. Its not just team numbers but they also have some of the top processing people on board. However, if you look at say the 100th team: http://stats.distributed.net/rc5-64/tmember.php3?team=115018148
They are really just getting by on the fact that they have been going a long time. Get more top calibre people on board (and quite a few ordinary ones - no contribution is worthless, I hope) and we could take teams like that.
I'm sure there is a point somewhere in this ramble - we need more people and I think a little recruitment campaign and an informal FAQ (I notice some people are put off by not having a permanent connection, for example) might help get the numbers up.

Hey! Maybe someone (Doc?) could design a sig for team members to fly in the forums.. all the sigs being the same design save for the name or whatever. Surely this would entice asylumites into the painless process of crunching some keys. Whad'ya say? I think the idea has merit. I have little doubt that this board could raise some eyebrows if we got a good percentage of its members involved. All those graphics machines- you know we got what it takes!
Doc, I'm curious about which dual chip mac you have. My single processor 466 will do about 4M keystrokes/second at full steam. Wonder what the dual 800 would do. Apples website says it performs at 11.8 gigaflops! Dang, I just got this about 6 months ago and the low end machines are nearly twice as fast already.. I still love my Mac though, it'll hang tougher than most PC's on a bad day.
cyoung: Nice idea - a kind of 'Team Asylum' sig with a link to this forum. It would help raise interest and make people look down here. I ssupect the problems with the stats are only temporary.
