Thats right folks! Anyone is willing to join in on this topic can do so.

Here's the game plan.

I post a thread say... Once a month? I name a topic, anyone who wants to rant, can do so. Here is the catch. You don't exactly have to post formally, but you should have a formidable understanding over what you are saying. Obviously I don't want any flamewars or 1-3 sentence posts. Make your post valuable to the people who read them. There is no winner or loser because, everyone can join in! Any information from websites should be documented, because even though this isn't formal it is honorable and mentioning sources would be great to help people learn.

Ok, on with this months topic.
Should the U.S. go to war with Iraq? Yes or No? Why? Explain...

And absolutely NO SIGS! I ask any mad sci who spots a graphic sig edit it out immidiately! But of course slimies are aloud .

edit: And you can post more than once. Try not to control the thread.

InSiDeR: Isn't this what we are already doing here anyway? For example this subject is/has been touched on a number of times in this forum.

The point of the Formal Debates is to introduces structures and rules to what the kind of discussions we have been having here.

Well excuse me for being creative. I have considered that thought emps... Can we just try this and see how it goes?

Plus an established monthly debate gives people a reason to express ideas, much like sig comps, repeat performance, and speed painting expand PS skills.

i agree with emps on this in some ways, it just looks like another "topic" thread that the Philosophy Threads already contain, almost always in the more sensible threads in here quotes, links etc are provided.

maybe a team debate as in the first one that kicked off this whole concept of formal debating would be a better idea, but give each team a country to play, and one team playing the UN. that wa you have several key players trying to convince others which path that team should take.

i think this is best left down to beekay at the end of the day as its his baby

edit: i have an idea that i will put down, its kind of a blend between the ideas put forward here, io think it could make a great formal but widespread debate, with a very current debate subject. but done in a different way

OK here's my suggestion

We take Insiders topic with a slightly different angle "Should the UN Sanction Military action to enforce UN resolutions against The Iraqi Regime"

Team A: The Iraqi Government

Team B:The USA And Coalition Partners

Team C:The UN

Team A puts forward its case
Team B their case
Team C their decision (in effect a mini debate)

And here is where the twist comes in.

The Mod/debate referee plays the role of weapons inspector, he will reveal at different times information that could be of benefit or detriment to both teams cases.

This will keep the debate lively and giving it a few unextpected curves aswell

InSiDeR: There is no problem with proposing ideas but you should take it on the chin if they don't get a positive reception

tomeaglescz: Interesting idea - I have thought that Team A's strategy has been poor (pos. not as poor as B's though ) so far so it would be interesting to see if the Asylum could pull out a better arguement

I suspect it would depend on getting enough takers but your spin on InSiDeR's ideas is worth exploring some more

well let's be honest here .. I don't mind the idea but to me in formal debates we have tackled much more important aspects to the global community (yes war does effect the global community) but war doesn't interest me .. all I have to say to the topic of war is "we should have finished what we started over 10 years ago and if we did we wouldn't be having this current problem" other then that I wont give my opinion

I liked webshaman's idea .. but I will admit I like the team idea .. I'd like to tackle something more promising something that effects an individual personally .. I'm not going to war and I would have to put myself (if the team idea goes forth) in the mind of the president or council and well I care not too and vis versa

damnit I'm forgetting to turn off my sig! .. edit erase!

I have nothing, in principle, against the idea...just that the topics offered don't interest me, so far. What might be of interest, is to start a thread on topics...just a general thread, where one could put possible topics, for discussions...sort of like the thread for the PSPong...the challenge area, so to speak, where people can find out what topics are up for grabs, suggest topics, etc...and where people can then get organized. One could call it Formal Debate Topics...or some such. There is really no reason, why we couldn't have more Formal Debates going, at the same time, as long as the participants are willing...
