Damanhur

I found this place by reading some strage stuff about time-travel. Some guy thinks this place is a community of time-travelers, but that is irrelivant. Once I went to their site, I was simply amazed at the awesome things they have done. They have build a huge underground cathederal of sorts that is as large as an 11-story building, they have created their own money, a peaceful society, and a haven for people who crave peace. They are a spiritual based community that harbors the beliefs that all of our power stems from within ourselves. It seems pretty awesome.

The question I have is why is it that the majority of the world does not think like these people? With this war currently going on, well...I should say almost over, why is it that we can not change our world philosophy and become a united and harmonious planet? Why are our leaders so arrogant and murderous? Why do they think peace must be achieved through war? Why don't cows fly?

Actually, I just thought this was a cool place, and thought you guys might be interested in knowing about it. You can just forget all those stupid questions, unless of course you have an answer to them.

GN: Ahhhh yes I read an article on this a year or so ago in the Fortean Times (if you don't already have one get a subscription to it - you'd love it). They have done some amazing things in their underground tunnels and temples - their beliefs may be pretty 'out there' but you can't question the sheer enormity of their works.

Because there are barbarians at the gates...and there are those, who cannot rest, knowing that some people are living in peace and harmony.

There have been many examples of such...enclaves, throughout history...a lot were destroyed from outside forces, but most were destroyed from within.

Sad, but true...

Why would some people not want the world to be a peaceful place? This is what I don't understand. What is it about human nature that causes people to become barbarians who feel the need to gaurd the gate and prevent true harmony? I mean it seems to me that as long as a country has good, well, at least somewhat good and honest...or rather pretty honest, leaders, than that country becomes peaceful. We should all model our governments after the best government in the world.

Gilbert, you have only to look at yourself to answer your question. Have you always acted in the best interest of those around you? Have you ever had a selfish thought? It all starts there. You have probably been raised with a certain set of values that help keep you more peaceful than others in this world.

I am willing to bet that you take those values for granted and you may assume that everyone else agrees with them. It simply isn't true. We humans have to be taught to love others, it does not come naturally. And there are a great number of people in this world who are not taught to love the stranger and many of those that are taught that, reject it to satisfy their personal desires.

Bugs - Well, I have this thing called empathy, which in case you did not know, really sucks. Sometimes when I see a person walking down the street, or if someone is next to me in another car, I can feel this sort of pain coming from then. My Mom has this also, and her dad. I guess it runs in the family. Sometimes it just gets overwhelming, especially in traffic, and I will find myself crying for no reason. Sometimes it's like I can feel the pain of the entire world. I often go to sleep at night with all my muscles tensed up from trying to stop all the pain from entering into me. It's something I'm learning to deal with, and my Mom even to this day still struggles with it. But, anyway, yes, I have always acted with the best interests of others around me in mind.

And I know that others around me do not keep the best interests of others in mind. I can see the selfishness all around me. The question isn't whether or not these people are selfish, it's why are they selfish? Why can't they realize the connection that exists between us all?

I read in the readings of Nastrodamos(sp?) that we are going to achieve a peaceful harmony and it will last awhile. I wonder.

I think only when peoples hearts change, the world will change. And how can we change peoples hearts?

Gilbert, in your feelings of empathy, I wonder if you and your mother were chosen for these emotions. It must be a spiritual cross of some sort or a connection. You must both love alot or have a great capacity to love.

GN - interesting stuff... I think the answer to your question is Greed. Conflict breeds profit. Someone has to win and the winner takes all (usually). Not to mention the voids that are left to be exploited.

Well, in answer to your initial question -

Thes types of places are always able to exist becuase they are within the protected confines of another nation, generally in an out of the way place that avoids the spotlight, and setup so that they can avoid the issue that plague a larger society.

It's a lot easier to limit your problems when you're not worried about being invaded, when your numbers are small enough that you can essentially avoid issues of class (they are not completely secluded, they are sitll bound by their reliance on mass produced products to some extent, which means they are still contributing to the problems that are caused by the practical slavery of third world nations who produce much of those products. They avoid having their own lower class) and when the people are gathered together because they beleive in the same things.

You can't use this as a model for society at alrge because the small scale model exists *within* that larger society, and not as a seperate entity.

In what respects exactly? I can see that with improved healthcare and more liberal attitudes (both of which are no bad things) the gene pool must be become less focused, so to speak, we're maybe diversifying rather than evolving now..?

hmmm it looks like a beautiful place. I am thinking of peaceful places I have noticed...such as the Amish, in Pennsylvania. A place where everyone helps everyone else. like in the movie "Witness". At the very least a place like this for the weekend..I love the future as well....so I'm kinda in between wishing I didn't have to lock my door.... and the old days.......and fixing a cup of tea for the alien.

My first thoughts also were "don't drink the kool-aide.."

I hope these people are left alone...and someone does not send someone to "convert" them. I love the idea of living in peace. I want peace and harmony.

I seriously doubt that someone could convert them, even if they tried.

As for peace and quiet...yea. I live in Washington DC, where every one is pretty uptight and always seems to be in some sort of competition for something that does not even exist. Like racing to get in front of someone on the highway, and seeing who can get in the door first at a restaraunt...Just a bunch of impatient, no sense of time or life sort of people. I mean, if I ever feel myself getting impatient when I am driving, I just try and think of how less than 200 yrs ago people rode around on horses.

Anyway, my wife's family owns a huge farm somewhere in the middle of nowhere, and we have been thinking about moving there and starting a little farm, perhaps buying a few chickens for eggs, and stuff like that. I don't know, its so inviting, yet I don't know....Maybe we will wait til we are older to move there, I'm not sure.
