I'm just interested because I'm starting a new idea .. and I don't know if it would be appropriate to share it with everyone here .. so I'm asking bluntly .. whom smokes Mari J here .. and what does it do for you .. meaning .. there a particular reason why you smoke it

RS: 'bluntly' - nice pun
I'd recommend that people think twice before admitting to indulging in illegal activities (if they are illegal in your country, of course).

if:
appetite stimulant/naseau supressor when applicable (stomach virus, etc.)
mood enhancer (creativity/*sex*)
reduce tension (for hypertensitivity--*otherwise just to get freakin' lazy!)
ever notice how much conflicting info there is out there. for instance, people started arguing how good it is for cancer patients, then, next thing you know, we are flooded with how it causes cancer even more than cigarettes.

quote: ever notice how much conflicting info there is out there. for instance, people started arguing how good it is for cancer patients, then, next thing you know, we are flooded with how it causes cancer even more than cigarettes.
The info is not that "conflicting", actually. It seems to be pretty established that, smoking a Joint, you inhale four to twenty times as much lung-cancer-causing substances compared to a cigarette.
But OTOH, if you already have some kind of cancer, you probably won´t be terribly afraid of long-term healt risks anymore, and from what I´ve heard THC can partially compensate for the loss of appetite caused by chemo-therapy as well as help ease the pain and nausea.
To the original question:
Pro:
Food tastes like heaven when high.
Able to be more immersed in books, movies, video games.
Enhances appreciation of nature´s beauty.
Laughing without reason.
Instant relaxation ("chillout").
Modified thought process (unusal insights/ideas)
Can be a social activity.
Con:
Unhealthy
Expensive
ADDICTIVE!
It is a very real possibility to become dependent on "enhancing" everything good, including social interaction, with THC. Even worse, dulling the pain of everything negative, or just starting the day, with a nice toke from the peacepipe might start to seem like a good idea. And it can kill your motivation and interest in anything, including life in general.
These are my personal experiences. I still like to smoke, but I also realize that I´ve wasted a substantial part of my youth smoking too much.
Back in the days I was annyoyed with people who only demonized the drug. I still am. But I´ve lately grown annoyed with people who unreflectedly promote it´s use, too.
Moderation in all things, and always abide your local laws *cough*...

Not to put anyone down here, but has it ever occurred to you that this is merely the way you perceive things when you are high?
I have never smoked MJ, so I can't speak for enhancements in taste or appreciation of nature, but I have spent plenty of time around people who do smoke, and I have been exposed to their "unusual insights and ideas." At least in my experience, people who smoke MJ think they are being quite profound, but to a completely sober listener their insights sound ridiculous.
Then again, I suppose everything is about perception, so if you think you are being profound, I guess that's good enough for some people.
Like I said, though, I've never smoked it, so I don't have any direct experience. That's just what it looked like to me from the outside.

I tried it a few times -- I think a great many people can say at least that much. Although it was sometimes fun, it just wasn't fun enough for me to really bother with on any regular basis. Thus, I currently refuse the peace-pipe even when it's being passed around (sorry WS!)

I once smoked something that had me housebound for three months. I suspect it was some specialised hybrid mutant strain that had been chemically treated with some intense psychotropic substance. I was forced to wear dark glasses and ear plugs the whole time in an attampt to limit the sensory overload I was experiencing. I could not go outside as the sky was just too big ...cars were too loud and buildings too heavy. I could feel the weight and gravity in everything. I had a strange curiosity to want to step in front of moving trucks and trains to experience the impact. I walked beside a powerful river and had to work real hard to resist its invitraion to jump in, megnetic forces pulling me all over the place The elastic of my psyche was being stretched to the limit and I feard it would snap. My perspective on physical reality and proportion was twisted frighteningly out of control. It was one of the most terrifying experiences of my life and I feard it would never end. Well after about three months it did wear off and I returned to normal. I wnt to see a doctor and he said I had reached a toxicity level of THC (Tetra-hydro-chloride) the stuff that gets you high.. it builds up and stores itself in your fat cells, then one day if you continually exert youeself and put you metabolism on full throttle it can disolve the fat cells and all that stored THC gets released directly into you blood stream. WHAM!! I was contiually hyper active so I got a release that lasted three dam months...
That was almost ten years ago and I not smoked anything more than a cigarette since that day.

SUHO:
Well, I wrote that these were my personal experiences, and the question of the thread was about our personal reasons to smoke. The fact that a drug experience can be nothing but subjective seemed self-evident to me.
My reason to put "modified thought process" under "pro" was not because the thoughts tend to be coherent or the ideas useful (they sometimes, but seldom are), but because it can be entertaining, relaxing, and sometimes inspiring to have the mind work in "free association" mode, uncensored by our usual inner "what a bullshit" voice. At least it can be an intersesting experience if you´re not able to shut this voice up otherwise. The ability to do that without drugs may be present in people to varying degrees (see children or very creative people).
If this sounds like I´m promoting something just read my "con" section for a little balance, and remember that, apart from the long-term effects I mentioned, even the momentary experience can be very negative (never happened to me, but...).
This is of course still all personal, and very subjective. The effects of mind-altering substances are as diverse as people´s minds.
XPI:
WHOA! This sounds very much like LSD-drenched Weed to me! THC alone could hardly cause such effects. Sounds not like something I want to go through...

MW: Understood. I was just giving my personal experiences, and since I've never actually smoked the stuff, my only experiences were as an observer.
[Edit: I have heard it said that marijuana is not physically addictive, but I notice that under your cons you stress that it is. Is it more of a psychological addiction, or did you find it to actually be physically addictive?]

Well, it´s not physically addictive, from my experience and from the limited scientific knowledge there is about it.
It is psychologically addictive, which is a term with a wide range of meanings, and difficult to define.
There are people who do it once a year, like it, and that´s it. There are people who get depressed or angry when they don´t smoke.
The latter was never the case with me. But neither was the first. Back in school, when I could smoke, I just did it. Felt like I had nothing better to do. It absorbed most of the energy that could have had me doing anything else.
Nowadays I have less free time (uni) and more other activities that I´m enthusiastic about. The Ganja has become a pleasure to indulge in now and then, instead of a permanent habit - And I´m glad about that.
Now somebody pass me the peacepipe!

Emps... how can weed trigger such an experience? I refer you to these links. I was not paranoid or agrophobic, I know the difference. This was more like an LSD-ish trip.
Marijuana in the Body:
When marijuana is smoked, it travels down the windpipe and into the lungs. Once in the lungs, the smoke passes through the bronchi and into the alveoli (air sacs) where the THC passes into the bloodstream. THC is then absorbed by most tissues and organs in the body, especially fat cells and organs such as the brain. The "high" reaches its peak in approximately 10-30 minutes and will last from two to eight hours, depending on the amount of marijuana used.
It takes a week to one month for all the chemicals from one marijuana cigarette to leave the body. As more marijuana is smoked, THC accumulates in the cells and the body is never drug free. When chronic users stop using marijuana, it takes about three months for the accumulation of THC to leave the body.
A common negative reaction to marijuana is the "acute panic anxiety reaction. "People describe this an extreme fear of 'losing control," which causes panic.

I do, not often any more, have done for the past 38 years, sometimes heavily (in my youth) nowadays not for months at a time ... I guess it's like drinking .. good when you do it in moderation .. but when weighed up as an overall thing, a bit of a bummer really.
Using it on a regular and sustained basis whacks your motivation to a major low, screws up your short term memory, reduces your level of committment and hence your reliability to almost zero, makes you unable to drive safely or indulge in everyday social intercourse (except with other smokers or very tolerant people) and makes your clothes smelly too ... not to mention the cough !!
Using it very infrequently and irregularly heightens the animal senses (probably by suppressing the human/social ones) ... and enhances the sensations from "feely" things like music, food, sex, etc.
So why do I do it ... no idea ... sometimes (most times) it comes hand in hand with "just one more tequila" ... and apart from that, I guess I'm lucky. I live in a country where it's legal, so there's no paranoia inducing "fear of being caught" for me to worry about any more ... plus, familiarity and ready accessibility make it much less of a "must have" and much more of a "maybe today" sort of thing ... I can take it or leave it.
