I didn't even try to register... When I click on the link with Opera, I get this page. I can access the home page of the website, and there I can click on this article, but again I am sent to this page. And now with IE, I get a login page.

Well... After reading this article, I was kinda digusted. When I saw how our society in turning people into mindless decerebrated fashion products, when I become aware nowadays the look is more important than the personality, when I saw the stupidity of humans who comply in this system, it really ashamed me to be human...

i know some people are more concerned with keeping up with fashion, rather than knowledge or character, but this is just absurd! - ok, it's stupid

my experience with fashion shoes? pointy toed shoes are bad enough with the foot problems they produce, but walking around on the balls of your feet (which is what happens when wearing the highest heels one can fit into without falling over) produces it's own pain. i once bought a pair of spiked heels and can still remember the feel of the nail (which is the center of a spiked heel) as i walked about the office and i knew then, that was the last pair of spiked heels i would ever own or wear..

i notice most mens clothes/shoes are practical.. who's designing for women and what fantasy are they acting out when they design the ridiculous?

I don't know... on first read, I thought the notion of cosmetic foot surgery was absurd but after thinking about it for a sec, why not? Some people have major body issues and if cosmetic surgery will help them to lead a happier life, then go for it. Removing a bunion and shortening an overly long toe seem within the realm of normal to me. I've seen bunions on some ladies and I'm surprised they can wear any shoe at all, let alone fashionable heels. I have no problems with people fixing themselves up if that's their thing. Personally, I think it's a waste of money but that's because my feet are normal and I'm not at all fashionable.

I think we should save our ire for the idiot shoe designers. Those super pointy toe squishers are too ugly anyway.

Ok, frist off - victims of fashion? No. Vicitmis of their own stupidity. There are a lot of terrible clothes out there that are "fashionable". You do have the choice to not wear them.

As Wes also alluded to, this is certainly not a problem of "nowadays". Foot binding was common practice for centuries.

Humanity throughout the ages has been ridiculously obsessed with fashion. I would go so far as to say that "nowadays" we are far less obsessed as a species with looks over personality.

Victorian age ring a bell? Look at any royal circle of any "civilized" society throughout history. It is purely disgusting.

Look at every other species of animal - how do they choose mates? WHo has the prettiest colors and the biggest horns...

I'm not so sure DL. Ever see a fashion show? No one buys the weird clothing yet they still keep churning it out year after year. I think it's a combination of both.. women who buy crap with a designer tag from people who don't care about women's feet. I blame them both

They are getting paid by someone to churn out those awful things...if they weren't, they could not.

And the bottom line is, every single person still has the ability to not buy a particular style of clothing or shoes.

If you want to cut your toes off to fit into the damn things, that's up to you. But don't bitch about how terrible it is that you 'have to' do so. =)

Whose to blame, Designer or Consumer? Chicken or Egg? They both are to blame (designer and consumer that is; not the chicken and the egg). With stuff like this it's hard to pin all the blame on either one. They both feed off of each other, so I would say it's both their fault. Fashion is an evolutionary process, so trends come about, not spontaniously but, because they were influenced by something before them.

There have been too many times where I've gotten upset watching TLC makeover shows (with the girlfriend) because of such stupidity. I feel sorry for girls growing up in a world where it's considered "wrong" and "ugly" to NOT where makeup or to NOT where expensive designer clothing. It's utterly-fucking-ridiculous. Way to make women feel like trash...

The other night I was watching "What not to wear" and I was disgusted. They took this woman who looked perfectly fine, and prodded, scolded and labeled her for the way she was living her life. They "hair designer" (some guy who looks like he washes his hair in the toilet) was telling her "oh, you need to get really expensive haircuts and then buy the most expensive shampoo to keep it "healthy and beautiful" because if you don't you'll look like shit again". The makeup artist (who I'm pretty sure was a whore with all the makeup she had on) made fun of the woman's choice in makeup because it wasn't what the women in magazines were wearing. I mean, what the hell?!

At the end of the show, this woman was blowing all her money on designer clothing (which was ugly as sin) stupid and pointless hair products and expensive hair dressers. To top it off, I think she looked like a wannabe celebrity at the end of the show, and it didn't look good at all.

So my point through all that ramble? The world is fucked and people are retarded. If you're not happy with the way you look, and you spend $10,000 on cosmetic surgery to "make you feel better", what are you gonna do when you get older and the $10,000 surgery fades away?

I'm afriad fashion has always gone spinning off in these ridiculous directions on rather abstract ideas of beauty (foot binding has been mentioned but there has also been corsettry, etc.) and I'm not sure you can blame the buyers or the designers as it is all part of a wider collective insanity . To follow on from Syanx's comment above - I do wonder why people trust the leading hairdressers when a lot of them have shaved heads or terrible haircuts and I do wonder why we let (disproportionately gay) fashion designers dictate the ideal female look (which seems to have gone from the skinny boy-like look to something that resembles a drag queen - skinny, big fake breasts and ridiculous high heels) or are they just reflecting some general feelings/tastes in society?

I'm assuming you're talking about the types of shows in which the women wear crazy clothes with 4-foot collars and comically enromous hats, that kind of thing. Those types of fashion shows are just that -- shows. It's more art than fashion and shouldn't be entered into what a designer creates as intended to be worn by someone on the street.

What's actually marketed for sale is sold because people buy it. The designers aren't to blame. If people didn't want it, it wouldn't sell.

And synax touched on a show for which I hold a particular annoyance. One of the "critics" of the "victims'" fashion sense is a fat guy with frizzy, laughably long hair. (No offense to fat guys or those with long, frizzy hair. You just kind of have to see this guy.)

Plus, they give these people $5000 to buy a new wardrobe -- and what do they typically end up with? Three outfits. Three outfits for $5000! I caught part of a show the other day and this woman bought two pairs of boots for more than $400! What average person has this kind of money to spend on clothes?

How about a show targeted at the real audience? Show me how to dress fashionably on a tight budget! Hell, show me how a person my size finds clothes to fit, period. (We're not all 6'6" and broad-shouldered!)

And the price of sneakers these days! Come on people, they're just sneakers! Stop paying so much so I can afford some! And how come all the soda machines are changing from cans to bottles?! I don't want to spend twice as much for extra soda I won't drink! And what's so hard about using a turn signal?! It's right there next to your hand!
