Its pos. not clear to people outside of the UK but there is a great tradition of the right wing press (run largely by North American based companies) for spreading Euromyths about pos. legislation taken to ridiculous extremes. It has got so bad the European Commission has had to go out of their way to track down and deal with the various rumours:
http://www.cec.org.uk/press/myths/

See for example:
http://edition.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2000/eurounion/story/laws/

Also check the source:
http://www.cnsnews.com

It doesn't strike me as a reputable outlet (although some of the right wing press must have covered it here - its no guarantee of diddly).

I'd wait until the issue is clarified before we jump to any conclusions.

I read about this quite some time ago (cfb's link is dated april 2002) in both local and international press. I even think I posted a topic about it back then...

I guess the suggestion to some extent could make sense, but as always when taken to the extreme it just get's rediculous. I can't imagine anyone being so stupid as to trying to ban the OT and so on, but it could make sense to limit childrens exposure to racist slur.

I guess cfb's article has it's basis in the suggestion covered here: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2002/04/03/neu03.xml
only taken to an extreme. I seem to remember that was part of the debate in Sweden. "Just how far should you abide such laws before they become absurd?"

Oh well.. One verified nutcase suggestion from a Swedish politican is that we should ban violent movies. Not stopping at that, he also thinks the individual actors should be held responsible for the behaviour of their characters. He has pinpointed at least one Swedish actor which he thinks should be prosecuted for his "violent portrayal" of a criminal detective. Apparently the actor has "contributed to a possible increase in police violence".

Luckily it seems as if noone is taking him seriously...

These types of stories strike me as agenda driven as opposed to objective. I would not be surprised that the laws as currently proposed would technically outlaw the Bible but part of the law is how it is enforced and applied. So actually banning the Bible? I can't believe that even the Europeans would go that far Let the grand secular experiment begin

At first, when I read this, I was like: WTF! Thats insane, and it makes me mad!

But then I realized that it is kinda silly, because you'd be outlawing parts of history, like the Gutenberg Bible...and stuff.

Anyways...
