I met with our printer yesterday and he recommended me using ATM font software (to turn off all fonts, to filter out unwanted fonts). The printer said it might be on the original disk used to load it on my computer. Well, I am trying to locate the disk- this may take a few days. |

OK I found this software on my pc. Did not realize it was installed. Any advice on how to learn ATM? |

Hmm... I don't remember too clearly about basic ATM, I think that's just to allow PostScript fonts to display correctly on a PC? You want ATM Deluxe to manage your fonts, but since you have to pay for it, I'd recommend Extensis Suitcase instead. Same thing as ATM, but it has a better preview function. |

If you buy ATM Delux you will also get ATR on the same disc. ATR is excellent with its ability to group all fonts into their respective families in your fonts menu. I remember when we upgraded to OS 9 and ATR wasn't available for it. It was a nightmare continuously opening font suitcases to check what the fonts were called eg univers condensed would be 'C univers'. if you have and use a lot of fonts I would highly recommend ATR and ATM |

For some weird reason, I have ATM and not Reunion. (shrug) If Suitcase allowed subfolders, it could do the same thing, but it sounds like ATR is the way to go, then. |

I think ATM Delux and ATR used to be sold separately. ATM should come with your OS and is used for type rendering but Delux you have to buy but it allows you to load much more than the 128 fonts a mac usually allows (although you can get around that if you don't have delux). I think the latest version is 4.6 and comes in at around £49 (UK) If you've never had ATR then it could be a case of what you've never had you never miss but I wouldn't like to be without it now. |

Thanks all. As you may well know by now I am new at print and using Illustrator. I use a PC and try to limit my font use to Helvetica, Helvetica Oblique and Helvetica Bold. As of now, the files I deal with are pretty simple. What I tend to do a lot of is copy/paste lots of text from Microsoft Word into Adobe Illustrator. Its too time consuming to re-type everything into AI, so copy/pasting seems to be the only alternative. |
