fauna: (used with a sing. or pl. verb) Animals, especially the animals of a particular region or period, considered as a group.

So let's see 'em! Animals are one of my favorite things to photo. I used fauna so as to include all kinds of creepy-crawlies too. Stretch animals to the broadest sense you want...

A few guidelines:
1. Photo needs to go along with the subject in some way.
2. Use thumbnails for photos with any dimension larger than 450 px or over 40 kb.
3. Post as many as you want.
4. At the end of the week the person who chose the topic will pick someone to choose the next topic. This isn't a "winner," just someone who gets to suggest the next topic.
5. No critiques (unless requested) this is just to share our photos.
6. No sigs.

Mmm.. why can't I reply? Is there a limit to the number of links maybe?...

edit: OK, that worked. We'll do her in chunks then.

This thread made me realize that it has been ages since I went to the zoo. We have a small local zoo nearby so I spent a few hours there today. Really had a good time too, it's always relaxing watching the critters. Thanks for the inspiration.

Just a thought for future reference.
is it acceptable to manipulate the images in any wasy (tones, sepia, overlaid images, etc) Or are we looking for straight camera composed (ish) photos?

For a picture of a dead cat, that's enough detail for me, thanks. I think it captures beautifully the motion of the car that hit it.

This has been nagging at me, and if people disagree, I'll shut up about it, but...

...it seems like a lot of submissions are photos people took days, weeks, months, even years ago, and sometimes I've seen the same photo submitted for two different weeks. Would it not be more interesting to make this photo of the week thing something you have to do THAT week? I mean, it's not a competition, but it would be a lot more fun if you actually had to take the photos you submitted the week of the thread. On the other hand, that would mean that people using film instead of digital cameras would be at a disadvantage. So, I wonder... how many people submitting for PotW don't have a digital camera?

I thought about that rule when I started this but then I thought there would be more participation if people could share older photos. A lot of us don't have the time each week to get out and take photographs for the topics. I think participation would probably dwindle if we instituted a rule like that.

I'm using an SLR (35mm, sometimes 120), and like krets I dont have time every week to go out and take pictures on that particular topic, then go develop and enlarge them, scan them, and post them... Plus, this originated as means of "showing our work," so what's the difference if u took it yesterday or a year ago. After all, the best images are the ones you thought wouldn't come out at all when you shot them.
I also think that participation level would drop by 95% if there was a condition that the picture has to be recent; although, I wouldn't mind it if I had a DC. But even then, for example for a topic like this one, in order to acquire a decent (not common) photograph one would have to go to a zoo, or some wildlife resort - and that's way too much hassle.

I understand that people don't have a lot of time, but at the same time, I don't have a lot of time either. A week doesn't give me much time to find something I think would fit the category nicely, and I haven't got a ton of photos sitting in reserve that I can just post at a whim. I want to participate, but it decreases the fun factor for me when I finally manage to take one photo that fits the category, only to see that others have posted 10 to 20 images each from their personal stockpiles. I mean, if the whole point is to show stuff you've done in the past, why not just make a thread with a bunch of links to these on-line galleries you guys have?

I'm not trying to stir things up or get in an argument, but what if the time frame was upped to two weeks, or a month? Surely we'd all have time in a month to get a photo or two taken? And it would be good encouragement for all of us photography fans to go out and do what we enjoy.

as i see it there is no need for change: unlike the picture of the week threads in the ps forum thses topics dont get locked up, so people can always add to them later. It doesnt matter when you took the picture if its a week ago a year ago whatever. The fact is you have taken that image, if you have the time to shoot a new one fine, if not there is nothing wrong with you displaying one from your portfolio...
