Hello all,
I have been hit by my first pixel poacher. A person has taken my graphics and posted them on his own site. I'm sure this must have happened to some of you here before. I would love to hear the best way to deal with it. Suggestions? Advice?
------------------

that has got to suck.....
i would say, just get in touch with the culprit, let him know he has been caught, ask him to take it down. what else can you do? It is a terrible thing, when you work so hard on something, and it is so easy for someone else to take advantage of you. A friend of mine said that he wrote a script to disable right clicking on a pc, i have never seen it before, nor attempted to write one myself. I hope that I will not have to deal with the same thing, I have a site coming up soon as well. so, uh, ummm, what kind of graphics you got on that sight there, ummmm, uhh, what was that url again?!?!? just joking around!

Ah, I've dealt with this one before! You could do all sorts of legal and scare tactics, but these things never work well. What I always do is create an online attck on the people involved, stating my case, posting examples, and sveral handy emails for other folks to swamp them with hate mail!
Admittedly, I get more traffic than you probably, and can generate a lot of comments to the parties resonsible. I always make a point of touching base with the root@... and the webmaster@... their HOSTING PARTNER, these folks hate plagiarism and bad press, and will usually help.
Why don't you state your case here, let us look at examples, and write nasty letters for you? Power to the people and all that jazz, we all *can* make a difference. I'll look forward to hearing more from you.
Your pal, -doc-

Several kinds of right-click preventing scripts are floating around. i am sure you can find examples on some HTML sites. this doesnt always help as people can just use the "print screen" button to copy everything, but it can help to some degree. I am sure a lot of the people here are familiar with http://moyra.com - she is the Guru of web copyright and "the eleventh commandment". just look around, there are options available. and posting the info here is gurenteed to give the poacher a wave of angry graphic enthusiasts e-mails...
------------------

Thanks a bunch for the responses. I am currently emailing the perp and am waiting to see if he complies. I'll give him a chance to redeem himself before I call forth the forces of the graphic community. I'll keep you up to date on the progress and report back my experiences.
------------------

If the web page of the offender is under some web page hosting service, like angelfire, geocities, or tripod, check the terms of use thing that the hoster has made. The person creating their web site has to agree to these terms, and there might be something under them about it. If that's the case, email the hosting service and they'll probably be glad to help.

Say, just a quick comment on those "right-click" prevention schemes. They don't work too well with my Macintosh, heh. (Only one mouse button!) If someone really wants such a script, it shouldn't be too hard to do, nearly the same as tracking mouse movements, with a specified function for right click.
-doc-

More on that right-click preventing script, if the person really means to "steal" something from the site, he WILL. That's just one more easy obstacle to jump over. He can simply turn javascript off or use the print-screen button as someone said earlier.
Kellz
------------------

Besides, I right click on images all the time for things like the properties, or if the image is a link i might click on it to copy the shortcut.

You can get around no-right click scripts by holding the left button, then pressing the right.
Not that I use no-right click scripts but here is my suggestion (I found this by accident).
- Create a layer with a transparent GIF inside.
- Track the onmousemove event.
- Position the layer directly behind the cursor at all times.
This way when the user right clicks, they get the context menu for the transparent gif and not the image behind it. It will fool some people.
------------------

I was thinking about this, and I realized that it would also prevent the person from clicking on any links... so it would have to be carefully controlled to avoid that problem.
------------------

Umm none of these tricks for the right-click works if the guy views the source and puts the path to the pic in his browser window.
Ultimately there just isn't too much you can do to the person if it's a personal site but if it's corporate send and e-mail to the webmaster or try something like legal@thecompany.com
------------------

Here's hoping that by now you have resolved the problem. In reading the posts here, there has been some very good advice offered. For myself, I usually give someone the benefit of the doubt first, and write them a polite note working under the assumption that they did not do what they did out of any sense of thievery but rather out of not being educated. Therefore I use the incident as an oppotunity to offer them a bit of education in a non patronizing or rude way, i.e. sending them a link to the 11th commandment at moyra.com etc or whatiscopyright.org. If that fails then I begin following the steps outlined here by others who have posted. With regard to no right click scripts, they are obsolete when it comes to IE 5.0. Simply using the save as option in IE 5.0 allows for the total downloading of all pages plus graphics which are neatly stored in their own folder upon completion of the save. The same scripts can be incredibly annoying for people who like to right click and launch a new window to view in, rather than waiting for graphic pages to load, etc. I truly empathize with you, as it is a pain to see your hard work hijacked by someone.
------------------
