That's right, real hungry.. and if I wasn't so lazy, I'd get off my ass and eat.
Anyways, I need some help here. Im trying to make a medicine bottle in photoshop (Im still not good enough at any other graphics program). This is for a school project I have to do on Ecstasy. I think I can get the shape right, but does anyone know of a good way to make the material for it? And a label would be cool.
Maybe I should just whip out the old 3d studio max, and figure it out.
- Dan -

Lord knows I love my Photoshop, but some things might just work better with a 3D app, at least at phase 1. I can see rendering the bottle and ten doing some 'post-process' work on it with photoshop maybe? Could be fun.
------------------

I know it's a bit late, but I threw this together while downloading a 13 mb file......the plastic (-ish) effect is the same as used in most plastic tutorials, i just applied it to a bottle shape.
I can post the step by step if you need it.
The label and lid suck, but you get the idea http://www.ramdesign.8k.com/pills/pills.htm
[This message has been edited by r@m (edited 20-05-2000).]
[This message has been edited by r@m (edited 20-05-2000).]

Yeah, I'm still too new at 3d studio max it seems. I can't shape the bottle, the material is easy, so is the perspective.
Any tips?
- Dan -

Hey, here's what I did to get my perspective work down pat. I used to have a job designing furniture, maybe 12 years ago now. I spent close to three years, drawing room after room, piece after piece of furniture, in perspective. After a year or two, I could hack out a perfect perspective drawing in a couple of minutes. Then I started playing with 3 point perspective, great fun! Then onto distorted perspective (this was just for me, with pen and ink mind you!), even more fun. Every day I'd draft out 6 or 8 full perspective displays for clients, it starts to become natural to you. Now, when I want perspective, I just draw it out in Photoshop!
...
Hmm, maybe a 3D app would have been easier. Next time maybe...! ;-)

There's so many different ways of approaching this problem in Max ...it really is down to your own personal style.
Can't explain in text I'd really need to write a tutorial........
Pregnant Pause
(Cue fanfare)
But I don't have to!!
It's already been done!
Git yerself across to taffix.com and check out the tutorial section, This had to be THE biggest online resource, for Max tutorials, and they're all free.
Here's the tut........ http://taffix.com/tutorials.asp?page=Surface%5FTools/bottle2.htm
If you don't know the technique, download one they made earlier...an tweek it a bit http://taffix.com/downloads/Models/bottle.max
enjoy......
Doc.. I do tend to try much too complex scenes, rant for a few hours, and walk away feeling dumb. I'll try some basic shapes next time, too damn keen i s'pose.

Here you go Dan give this a go, good luck, hope this helps.
Start these steps from a fresh boot, or reset Max before attempting this.
Left click the top viewport.
Press "w" to maximize the view.
Press "s" to switch on the 3d snap.
In the main toolbar select "Shapes" then choose "Line".
You need to draw the outline of your bottle, but only half of it.
Imagine your bottle shape and slice it down the middle, top to bottom, then draw the left hand side, from bottom to top, like this.
Make sure you finish at the top.
Ignore the dotted lines on the left, this is just to keep the shape when i post this.
. . . . . . . . .5____6

It seems to work, but I need clarification on a couple things. Where do I write click to get the "Convert to Editable Mesh" option, I tried on the mesh, no Convert to Editable Mesh option. And, My meshsmoothing option changes the image to much, is there anyway just to go rounded corners?
- Dan -

Yeah , I can see how that can happen, it depends on the shape of your original spline as to the outcome of your meshsmooth.
Try this.....
Ditch the meshsmooth..........in the modify panel try bumping the "Segments" up to 64, this has a more subtle smoothing effect.
In the modify panel....Go down the "Modifier stack",....... back to the original "line" you made.... click on "sub object vertex", you can now select those 6 points you made when creating the spline, in the top viewport select and move those points, when youve moved a couple around click and hold down your mouse on the icon that looks like a little test tube half full of milk.............this updates the view and shows you the result of your sub object editing......if you want, try right clicking over a vertex, and change it to corner or bezier corner, you can now change the curve exactly like using the pen tool in PS, or Illustrator.
Don't forget to jump back up the top of the stack when your finished.
Try it with and without a meshsmooth, to see which gives the best results.
I hope I'm explaining this well enough, if you don't have any success with this, I'll throw in a couple of screenshots tomorrow, I've already got the text part done

[This message has been edited by r@m (edited 21-05-2000).]

Sorry for the hassle Im causing you. Another problem is, before I use the lathe, the center moves out of where I want it to be, so I end up with lines after I lathe that I need to delete, but when I delete them, it makes holes in my bottle =[
(by center I mean the x axis and y axis thing that everything works around). How do I move the center? Is there a way?
- Dan -

One thing about Max Dan...when things start to go wrong, it's like a bad relationship.......it never fully recovers.
Delete all traces of the bitch, and start again
You shouldn't have to delete anything, when you cre......aaaaaahhh! When your making the spline make sure you first click begins on the thicker line of the grid, that is the vertical line, make the spline on the left hand side of the black cross of the grid, it must begin end end exactly on that vertical line. Sounds like when you first create the spline your view isn't centered so make sure that your view is set to "top" press "t" or better still.......reset.
