okay, i'm scared and need to get my act together...

i've been debating over 'zerominuszero.com' and 'zerominuszero.net' for some time now, but just tonight i discovered '.com' had recently been taken. that's okay, i like '.net' better anyways..

but, i was planning on using dreamhost.com for all of my domain stuff. does anyone have any experience with then? possibly are there any other recommendations?

i was looking at 9.95$ a month for 30mb space (gonna pre-pay a whole year to get that deal) and then paying them 30$ a year for the domain name... so that's 150$ for a year total, good deal?

please help, i'm lost.

Well, I ran a traceroute at http://noc.visi.com/cgi-bin/traceroute-you?name=www.dreamhost.com to see how their own site loads, not too bad...

Traceroute from noc.visi.com to www.dreamhost.com:

1 fa0-1-0.core-1.mpls.visi.com (209.98.98.254) 1.107 ms 1.138 ms 2.977 ms

10 209.85.101.177 (209.85.101.177) 59.855 ms 60.434 ms 60.142 ms
DONE!

I'd like to see some of the other sites they host and run the same test on 'em, just to make sure they're as well connected as the www... address. The price seems right, though! For myself, I'd have to watch my total bandwidth usage allowed, I can do 40 gigs a month easy, way past most hosters limits for the basic rate. YMMV.

OK, here's one of their hosts...

VERY very good tracroute times! FWIW, they set the 'unlimited bandwidth' at 2gigs/month average, plenty for most usages, but my site would cost perhaps an extra $570/month, which seems a bit extreme. No slam on them, my site on anyones server is almost automatically considered "abuse" of the system! <g> VISI ended up just moving me to my own dedicated server, no charge - seemed the best way to keep me from slowing the rest of the network down.

Heh heh...giving you a limit on unlimited bandwidth. It sounds like a lot of ISP's here in Australia that say...We'll give you unlimited hours per month to surf the net, and 100mb of downloads. Not telling the unsuspecting consumer that the 100mb of downloads isn't just any programs and stuff that they download, it's everything, from the pages to the images and EVERYTHING.

You can buy any car that you want, so long as it is a puce green, two door voltswageon.

--doc--

thanks a lot for running a 'tracert' on their site and a hosted site for me, i never even thought of that! *dur*

well considering my page averages 500 hits a month and doesn't offer any file downloads or whatnot; so 2gigs/month for the site should work out just fine, hahaha.

there yah go, looks like i'll be buying my first domain this friday when i get my paycheck, yee-haw! it only took me 4 years of doing my own website to get around to acquiring a "real" domain, sheesh.

now i just need to finish that new design.. damn.
